Bear in mind that the diesel engined CR-V is no longer available in SA.

Thanks.

How did you ask? Did you ask for a better price or did you tell them that you can only afford X amount and would like it if they can get the price down to your limit?

Sorry, I am useless with these things.
Ask how negotiable they are... Once they give you a value, try drop it a bit more by a thousand or two...

Thanks. That sounds like a good plan. Will try that when we start negotiating price.

I'm having my brother go and view the vehicle today because it is in Johannesburg and I am pretty much stuck in office from 7am everyday.

The dealership has been very forthcoming with info. Even phoned the previous owner to enquire about the clutch and what the vehicle was mostly used for. Urban (stop-go) driving or highway (long drives) driving.

They even offered to bring me the vehicle should my brother not be able to come and view it.

Okay. Finance app is in for the vehicle.

I told the sales person and F&I Manager what my budget was and they said they will try and get as close as possible to that.

Holding thumbs here.

I do not think the CRV will use the same clutch as the Civic - I stand corrected on this. If it does, you are looking at R24k all in to replace it with Honda. That is what my Civic's Clutch/DM-Flywheel + Labor cost 2 years ago.

Can you find a CRV with the i-DTec engine somewhere? It is more refined and slightly more torqey.

Although the clutch does bother me a little bit, the car I applied for has less than 90'000km on the clock. So clutch should still be good for some time. We barely did 25'000km in 3 years with our current Polo anyway.

And if really needed I have a full time mechanic (and friend) working for me who is also a certified Diesel mechanic. He replaced the clutch on our previous Polo and also does all our fleet vehicles' maintenance. He will be maintaining the vehicle anyway. So should the clutch need replacing it will be at a fraction of the cost than at the dealerships.

I believe they also include a 2 year Mechanical Failure Warranty on the vehicle if I recall correctly from the phone call with the sales executive. (Obviously it is charged extra but I believe it is worth it). I will just have to find out if the clutch is covered under that.

My Honda's clutch started slipping sporadically on 68,000km under flat-foot acceleration in 4th gear. By 75,000km it was doing it in 2nd. Granted, this is a known problem with 8th-Gen diesel Civics but Honda refused to treat it as such, particularly since the car juuuuut went out of warranty. Wonderful!

I have another 8th-Gen diesel Civic now, albeit a 2012 facelifted model. I treat its clutch very gingerly now, just in case. Its on 45,000km now.

Be careful with these especially if they're third party (i.e. SuperGroup, Motorite etc.), they often have claim limits for certain parts (i.e. no more than R7,500 for the engine, R3,000 for a colling system etc.) and don't cover others. They also make the process as difficult as possible.

Thanks for the heads up. I will definitely have a look at the terms before signing or accepting anything.

If it's an iCDTi CRV then it is in fact the same clutch as the 8th gen Civic.
Fortuantely as I've said before, we now have other options besides the oem clutch and flywheel available.

I had the 2 year warranty on my car, never used it- extra money wasted in my opinion. However, I'm not saying don't do it, especially in light of these chocolate clutches- it's certainly better paying only the partial amount for a replacement than the full amount. Whether the clutch will fail is a bit of a hit and miss afair. Take my car in contrast to lcbxx for example.

AFAIK clutch is excluded by most of these third party warranties as it's a "Wear and tear" item. And even if it was covered for up to R7,000, some insist that you get the job done at a OEM. So it cold come to pass that you're getting a R7,000 discount on a R30,000 oem job instead of getting a private mechanic to do the same job for R12,000.

Then you would be stupid to go oem and not immediately cancel said warranty and going to the private mechanic- just my opinion (not intended as a flame). If you're going to have to fork out 23k anyway (your example) then get a better aftermarket clutch. 12k +/- 7k either way is still cheaper than 23k.

What I'm saying is if (hopefully if and not when) it happens, you will have to decide the better financial path to take, all things considering.

True, but then you've still forked out for the warranty that is now useless. My argument is that these aftermarket warranties aren't usually worth taking out when buying a second hand vehicle, but it all depends on the fine print.

Offer to purchase just signed and submitted.

Removed the maintenance warranty and bunch of other extras the dealerships usually try to add on to the deals.

Will only take delivery of the vehicle next week though as they just sent it in to have all the scratches and stone chip marks to be removed. As well as fitting 4 new tyres and a full valet and glaze. (all at their cost).

Thanks for all the advise guys. Very soon I will be able to join the giving side of the advise.
