I'm in the market for a new second. My heart says Honda Civic 2008. I love the space age shape. My head says Honda Jazz. It is a stunningly sensible car. I'm looking for practical advice on these two cars.

I'd go with the head probably. How's the mileage / conditions?

I recently bought a 2008 Civic with 40,000km on the clock and I love it to get from A to B. Great drive and the fuel economy is fantastic. Currently sitting on 7.2L/100km average...

Well the. Jazz is the safer bet - obviously - and the one I would choose (still under warranty, maintenance plan, etc). It is not in the same league as the civic - obviously - but if you can live with the Jazz then the choice should be pretty straight forward.

It's not like either of these cars are going to give you the ultimate driving experience anyway. After 3 months you'll be used to whichever one you picked.

Use your head.

I would say go with the civic. I was in the same situation about a year and a half ago, had the choice of a civic with high-ish milage or a Getz with very low milage and service plan. I went for the Getz and it was great at first. Now i kind of regret it and badly want the civic.

Both are good.
If you can't decide, go look at a city golf and then go buy one of the Honda's.

As a Civic owner (and ex Jazz user for a long while) it comes down to what you want.

Both come with a great mix of safety, fuel economy and features (if you chose the right spec).

What the Civic does better than the Jazz:
Power - The long gearing means you don't feel particularly fast, but it has far more grunt that any Jazz
More comfort travelling over longer distances - As a highway cruiser/repmobile the Civic is far better than the Jazz

What the Jazz does better than the Civic:
SPACE! With those foldaway seats and large bootlid, packing the Jazz is far easier than packing a Civic (which has a woefully shallow boot in sedan guise, and a better but "less awesome than Jazz" amount of space in Hatchback guise).
Town runabout - It's smaller, a bit lighter on fuel, and has more than enough grunt to get you from A to B around town. It's also good for the occasional highway bit.

Go for the newer car. It is a no brainier in this case. The Civic hats has a bigger engine and boot but it is almost 6 years old.

I have the 2006 Jazz. Interior space is larger than the 3 Series BMW. But yea, I'd love the new one... *le sigh*

Might have a larger interior space, but my pet peeve with Japanese cars are the lack of auto down/up on all windows. This weekend I drove a grey import Pajero V6 and I was delighted to find all windows had auto down/up.

I have never been in a car that has auto windows all round. My Polo has auto windows for the 2 front ones though.

Now that you mention it, the Pajero was a 2 door and my Corsa only has electric windows in the front. Will check on my mom's C-Class if it is auto in the back.

Honda and Toyota are notorious for only offering auto down and only on the driver door. That makes them a fail in my books.

Writes off two car manufacturers because no auto windows all round, seems legit.

Also only auto on driver window on the Hyundai i20

Up here in JHB the windows are so advanced, that parking at certain intersections, the open up completely. All by themselves.
Just have to keep a leach on your stuff otherwise they jump out the open window - more advanced stuff.
