Outside the context of religion the word is meaningless.

let go of the steering wheel.
imagine a world which was "meaningless". would it be any different to the one we're in now?
why? can you prove it? or is it just that you wish it were that way...

personally, i don't believe immortality makes any sense outside of our biology.
we want to live longer because we know our body is going to rot and that's going to be the end.
if we couldn't die, what would we do and why would we do it?
i can't think of much we do which doesn't have a biological motive at its root.

^ This

+ immortality brings another friend called procrastination.

Why do it now if you have no rush to do it at all.

Because it wont be any fun being a street sweeper for all eternity?

Perhaps think of it like this - there are plenty of people in the world who have more money than what they could possibly spend in their lifetime, and yet, they still work, making even more money they cant/wont spend. So why is he working so hard to make money when money is essentially worthless to him? There are plenty of other ways that humans get motivated imo.

That is OK, now that your consciousness is in some sort of electronic medium we could just program you to think being a street sweeper for all eternity is very fun :D

make him live forever and why would he need to/want to work? why would we need street sweepers if we could live forever? why would we need an economy/trade/reciprocity if we didn't compete biologically? why would our quality of life make any difference if it had no bearing on our survival?

perhaps once we sit at the top of maslow's heirarchy, we do things which will distract us and entertain us. to take our minds off the fact that ultimately we are no different from the street sweeper. all that extra cash will make no difference when we're both in the grave. but it'll at least keep our minds off the great leveller. and perhaps there's always the fear that our own providence can never be 100% assured or controlled by us - an evolutionary instinct if you will.

You didnt get my point at all, you're just repeating the same thing now... He already has all the money in the world, so why is he still working for money? Hence, there are other motivators in this world to go to work. I think that the same applies to life, there is more than one motivation to it other than escaping death, or getting everything done before being dead.

Also dont think its a big issue as motivation could be applied in patch 1.01

I still have a problem with procrastination, guess can be patched as well. My biggest issue with this whole immortality thing is pointed in the 1st video I posted ie: removing copyrighted works and having a proper version for the rich vs a add supported medium for the poor.

The moment you tamper with the code you remove what makes us human.

Why? Are people who see psychologists/psychiatrists (whichever one dishes out the happy pills) less human because they are being tampered with? Is tampering with the code of a human replica not the same as tampering with the chemical makeup of a persons brain?

let me flip this around.
tell me what you'd do if you lived for eternity? why would you do it and why would you stay motivated to do it?
why, as elimentals said, would there be any real urgency or drive to do anything?
you've got eternity on your hands here... that's a lot of time :)

Simple, you not editing the code directly. You just amending the conditions so the code can correct itself.

I can imagine a world/universe which is "meaningless". I just see no evidence of such a world/universe.

Soooooo sooooo much to do
For all eternity, probably not? But enough to keep me busy and happy for the next 10,000 years. Easily. And hopefully by then Diablo 4 or Starcraft 3 is out :p

You made it sound like everyone would instantly become unproductive in every sense of the word. I say thats untrue.

i'm still not fully understanding why there would be a need for motivation?
it just becomes a circular argument for me. sorry, i'm not adding much value here.
i guess i'm going through a bit of a hard determinist phase atm... :(

i think you'd need to redefine what "productive" means in that sense...
but yeah, i could see you keeping yourself busy with some crazy hardware configs for a few centuries :p

Sorry to bring the whole soul issue up again, but tell me, if every human emotion, action etc. is catered for by the brain, what function is left for the soul? Outside the context of religion the word is meaningless.

Wow, I missed this little gem. Which religion is the mostest meaningful in all the land then? Let me guess, yours?

I said 'word'.... not WorLd.

Jesus, read a little slower perhaps. You might miss something crucial.

:D

Then how do you distinguish from simply making a copy of yourself that shares your memories, and transferring yourself into another body?
You're not living forever then, you die and some robot imitates you afterwards. That might benefit other people, but it doesn't do you any good.

I'm saying that there is no function for a soul. The brain controls everything. Your feelings, memories, self-awareness etc.

If your brain is dead you are dead. Assuming a soul you have to also assume a purpose for the soul, but if the brain does everything, what's left for the soul to do? Metaphorically burn in hell or something?
