Fireworks money‘ won‘t help much
IN reply to SM Will‘s letter, “Can put money to better use” (The Herald, December 30), about six weeks ago, e-News reported that one third of this country‘s gross national domestic product is stolen.
This figure was calculated by a United Nations agency that investigates and reports on such matters, obviously to establish member countries‘ creditworthiness.
There were no subsequent reports on this issue in the media.
If this enormous fraud can be stopped, poverty in South Africa may be a thing of the past.
The effect of buying food and clothes for the poor from the church‘s “fireworks money” instead of actually having the fireworks display, will not even constitute a drop in the combined oceans of the world. It will mean zip.
Will should take care not to confuse churches and church-goers with Christians. There are many church- goers, but very few Christians around.
Regarding the ever-whining dog lover brigade, there are people who dislike dogs, myself being one of them.
Dogs keep us awake, tear open our rubbish bags (why do the so-called dog lovers starve their animals? Is this “tough love?”), chase me when I cycle and they defecate on my sidewalk. I am traumatised by dogs daily.
If dog owners are anguished by their dog‘s trauma during fireworks displays, run along to the vet and buy a couple of tranquillisers. They are inexpensive and will keep old Rover as cool as a cucumber during the event.
You also have a choice to take your dog to a quiet place whilst fireworks displays take place. Beachview is quite nice.
A blessed and prosperous New Year to all.
