Health department spokesman Sizwe Kupelo said the general workers were caught by security guards on Friday with the copper cable in their possession.
And he revealed that the thieves‘ reckless cutting of pipes could have endangered patients‘ lives as the theft disrupted the flow of oxygen to operating rooms and the intensive care unit.
Kupelo said the three had not been arrested, but a criminal case had been opened. They had also been suspended. “Their disciplinary hearing will be held next year,” Kupelo said.
However, the arrests have done little to end the spate of copper wire theft that has plagued the hospital, as more wire was stolen on Saturday, the day after the employees were caught
