Cape Town - A 24-year-old police constable has been arrested and admitted to hospital after shooting himself in the leg in a botched hostage incident on Monday.
Captain Elliot Sinyangana of Western Cape police said the constable was attached to Bishop Lavis police station on the Cape Flats.
He allegedly held three senior officers at gunpoint in the office of the station commissioner at about 14:00.
Sinyangana said: "In the process, the cop apparently shot himself in the leg
and was overpowered by the officers.
Under police guard
"When he shot himself, they jumped on him."
He said the constable was arrested and taken to a hospital where he could be treated under police guard.
The motive for the hostage-taking and the circumstances of the drama were being investigated, as well as a case of attempted murder.
