I would do this, given the chance, hell I probably wouldn't come back, but I don't know what direction to go into, where to find such places etc.

I don't think anyone specifically looks to become a porter at a hotel. My theory is that you set a goal and you take every opportunity you get to make that a reality.

I do admit scholarships can be hard to get as well as bursaries, but that does not mean you should not apply. I do not have the links with me but check out Transnet, Eskom, Telkom they give out bursaries for all disciplines not only Engineering and their bursaries are great. They can offer funding right after matric. If you have the time I remember UCT had a booklet for all the bursaries and scholarships offered by lots companies for all careers. I used that alot when I was looking.

What does mags have to do with anything? It's my first car I don't expect a BMW ._.

You can find good deals. I got a 1.8l Toyota corolla '96 model with 54000km on the clock from my best mates deceased grandfather for R40k. Basically it's a brand new car.

You don't need mags.
R40k will get quite a nice sound system and a bit of orange carpet to go on the dashboard.
Don't forget the old CD on the mirror and a plastic orange on the radio arial.

A R30K car is crap. Don't do it.

Nah. My lil' Corsa is only worth around R30k but it gets me from point A to B. Paid that bad boy off in a month or 2 and now I can focus on things that actually matter :)

I wouldn't recommend a Citi Golf. Most of my friends who've had them either had them stolen, broken into or they are so unreliable they just become a mess to maintain. My room mate has 1 and the amount of times I've had to go help him jump start it or even bring him petrol because the fuel gauge stopped working and showed him he had half a tank when he actually had nothing >.<

Also don't forget once you buy a car you need money to pay for insurance, petrol and services. Unless your parents are paying for that? Or I suppose that if you got a job to buy the car, you'd carry on with that and put that money to the running and maintenance of it.

Either way, I'm happy with my cheap "crap" car. Some days I wish it had aircon but then winter comes and it's all good again :p

This is my plan for buying my first car. Only issue is that I live with my brother and we only have one parking bay in our complex. More than enough cars have had break-ins outside that I'm not even going to bother buying it until I have a parking bay.

Wait tables or serve drinks or deliver food. The food industry always needs people. Problem with SA is, there's no minimum wage so if you take a low paying job the floor's the limit. When I was in the UK in your position I used to do any kind of odd job around, like night shift factory work or delivery, and it was enough to get by on and have change at that age. Here you can't really do that. Are you PC literate at least?

Lolwut?

Oh and OP a mate of mine was earning (back in 2006/7) roughly R600 per night waiting tables at Spur, but he was charismatic but no reason why you couldn't get close to that. I know waiting tables isn't ideal for a guy in matric but my other mate was a bartender at a restaurant while we were in matric and that helped pay for his studies.

If you want a car that badly go out and work for it, don't listen to these guys who give you stick about the price of the car, once you have the money your mind might change or you make saving more a goal, but you first need to get started.

Charismatic = 'off-the-menu' specials in a bathroom stall?

Are you bi-lingual? If you are, there are companies who do translations and are often keen to hire people on a part-time/weekend basis. I used to make quite easily R4000 per month extra just doing translations (English - Zulu - Zulu - English) partime when I had financial struggles in 2007... Lots of words though and you must be quite good in both languages to give credible translations. Good luck!

Well, in the UK if you're sweeping glass on a factory floor you're at least earning £6.50 an hour. That's enough to get a place to sleep and food, and if you're young it's fine. Here if you're reduced to becoming a household domestic, you can get as low as R2000 a month. I don't even know how to buy food for myself for that amount.

Except that he's a complete introvert.

I made good money in my school and campus days buying and selling phones, bottled water, sweets, airtime and other stuff to corner shops/supermarkets. I was not the trading type and quite shy but I got better as I went along. You will learn good lessons from this. If you say you have some knowledge about building PCs then this is your skill, you could look at buying/selling new/used PC parts. You could charge for fitment too. Lots of people dont have these skills, yes their are many people doing this but does not mean you can't make money. These are short term goals but, you will need to know what you want to do long term and go for it.

Dont let anyone deter you. When I was in campus, over 1 December period I made R30,000. This enabled me to buy my first car cash for R60k, a black Polo Playa 1.6. Damn I miss that car.

But the translation of most South African languages is still inaccurate, humans still do a much better job than a machine... Google translate is horrible! That's why there are companies world-wide still offering translation services

Yes I know the grammar is bad, was jj.

But wouldn't these tools make their jobs easier? and probably not need as many people? I think as these tools get better, those companies will start to suffer. I am sure their are other better tools out their to do this automatically.

I want to buy a car in December, maybe February next year, but I don't have enough money.

I'm only 18 so I don't have any experience.

Why don't you teach some people how to use their smartphones ?

Teaching people that were born before the internet is a good start.

Grannies, grandpas ....
