With the ability to change SP, an 083 number could be on a network other than MTN.

Is there any way one can determine which network a numer is on?

listen to the dialing tone? :D
+1

MTN has a much deeper dialing tone (the sound you hear whilst waiting for the call to connect). Vodacom, Cell C and Virgin Mobile use the same dialing tone as Telkom, IIRC.

Call the number, 083 was traditionally MTN. If as the call is placed, before the ring tone. You'll hear 3 high pitched beeps indicating the number has been ported, although this does not, as I understand, indicate to which network is was ported to - but it's no longer MTN.

The ring tone works between MTN and non MTN as well.

You could always try send it a free sms from the mtn site, if they on mtn they will get it otherwise it won't let you send it :)

*140*Yournumber# then you'll see a message error saying you cannot send to yourself...
Which will assume it Vodacom... oops it is Vodacom:p

Its obvious you are referring to a another persons number and not your own. In this case you need access to the number portability database but that will cost you a hefty license fee and you need to be a WASP.

Access to this info is strictly governed and WASPS are prohibited from sharing this info. We can only use for routing MTs to the correct networks.

Yes, I am refering to another person's number. I'm sure I would know who I am paying.

@Sight, that's exactly what happened - I tried sending an sms to a 083 number from my mtn phone and it was refused. As I was not aware that the number had been ported, it came as a surprise, hence my post.

So it seems that other than a situation as happened or by seeing that the charge is higher than for a call to your own network, there isn't a simpr\e way of checking portability. That looks like a nice little loophole to be gouged in the wallet yet again :(

I think that answers your question. I've heard these beeps before though I have never known what they meant!!!

Hi All,

I've only joined a few minutes ago but saw this ancient thread and thought I could put this in in case anyone searches similar:

To check any cell number in South Africa to see which network they subscribe to currently point your browser here:

https://www.porting.co.za/PublicWebsite/ and it is self-explanatory from there.

TIPS:

* That link can be temperamental at times; if so go to this more stable site and scroll to the bottom where there is a link to the site above which has always worked for me as Plan B.

* Make sure you leave the gaps in the number as per the example

* Hit the Query key not enter as that can also cause an issue at times

* If You are going to do multiple checks in a session be prepared to speak Captcha or similar, single checks take under 30 seconds unless You are an outrageously slow typer.

* The site has nothing to do with me I am a consumer so this is all I got, please don't scold me if it breaks, it has never let me down and I've used it for months and for many different numbers.
