This is the fundamental problem with all these 'solutions'. What options are there for those of us who can't afford any of this stuff?

DIY and such...

I'm looking at the moment.. Batteries are obviously the killer for extended run times...

But for around R50k you could probably build up a pretty decent setup to take most of the essential load off the grid and leave the heavy lifting stuff to Eskom...

^^^ thats over 70k
Yup, I spend R350 a month on juice, so that's 17 years to pay off.
Worth every cent
Plus it adds over R70k to my property value.
But 1st things 1st, I hope to have my bond paid for in 3-4years time, Im putting an extra 40% in every month to kill interest

Totally agree.
Yes batteries are the biggest killer and oneday when I do go offgrid it will only be lithium i buy.
I cant bring myself to buying lead acids and such and knowing that I need to replace them every plus minus 5 years. Eina !!!

I find it very strange that Eskom is struggling to cope with "coal shortages" and "maintenance". Methinks Eskom is holding SA ransom to justify some more tariff increases in the near future...we have massive coal supplies yet it seems Eskom does not want to pay the full price for the coal as no politician or political ally is receiving a brown envelope.

the coal they have is kak quality and it is damaging their equipment. We need new coal mines and it takes 5 years to get a mine active

I have just come out of a meeting at work I was called into advise the stakeholders.
The long and the short of it is, we believe Eskom are not going to get the increase they want, and will punish us for it, and in future they will probably definitely go the way of the crapper regardless because of their current debt problem.
So we are installing a generator and a nice UPS

You're only doing that now?

Seriously?

Because you think that R50K is a viable alternative to the R70K option when I can't even afford R1K. So different universes.
Different methods of funding... I don't have 50k to just slap down on something like this...

An alternative power solution can be funded out of "long" term secured debt rather than cash up front... it changes the figures significantly since a chunk of it can immediately be offset against savings on the electrical bill itself.
