How criminals steal your credit card info

Very informative article, thank you!

I always shield the keypad when entering the PIN.

Also touch some other buttons on keypads (without actually pressing them), as some fraudsters use thermal camera's to see the key's you've pressed after you've been to the ATM.

Interesting vid. Seems a little elaborate for SA crims though...pretty sure they'll just hit you until you tell them the pin.

This is a great article. It hits home with me because, my credit card has been defrauded 3 times this year.

Each time pretty much the exact same thing. Some random airline booked somewhere in the world just before midnight and then a number of other transactions just after midnight (on the last two occasions this included transactions at our two biggest online retailers).

Thanks for the tip I too always cover the keypad. Though I think it will be difficult to impossible for them to easily isolate my pin keys after I press more keys to punch in the withdrawal amount etc

Mind spilling the beans? Would help us as we need to know what we are dealing with.

Edit: Is it that your details were stolen elsewhere and then used to purchase goods on our online stores, or your details were actually stolen from the online retailers' payment portals?

I noticed that some machines at the till points have a cover all around, so you do not need to play hide and seek with ur pin .... why do the banks not change all their machines at retailers to at least have this extra security, surely u would have thought about this when rolling out the chip and pin!!

One of the most annoying things i see at retailers is the POS machine tired to the desk and the keypad shield removed  I think retailers who do this should be fined.

Lastly I always remove my cvv number.. not so much for card theft as its often punched into the plastic :( but to remove from gaze from handler. I've seen some till people look at it odd when they see it removed.. gotcha. The CVV thing is more and more common than actual card copy where only chip card is allowed. its the most insecure part

What did you do? Did you buy something on-line from someone? Did you lose sight of your card for a moment? Did you do a transaction with your phone? Did you run Windows?

I wouldn't use my card online anymore without it being at least 3D secure. And of course, there are also options like MasterPass (shameless plug)

A couple of guys in our office also got this. After talking between ourselves we eventually identified a common culprit - Delta Airlines!

All of us made bookings (for work) on personal credit cards and claimed it back after the fact. I for one almost never use my credit card for anything, but I did use it to book tickets.

These were used to book tickets online (but at that point in 2012 Delta didn't use 3D secure).

Think I'll grab a separate credit card for online purchases...

Already have a virtual one but those are limited due to lack of AVS.

This.

I nearly threw a fit when the teller at nandos decided to punch in the card details including the cvv into the machine

Same here,

although, my first instance was from somewhere in the states(Hollywood to be exact), an amount for like R8000, second time was blocked by standard bank, and the most recent time was a travel agency in the UK, an amount of R18000.
The only real link i could find was, each time this happened, i had paid for parking, either long term or prebooked, at O.R. Tambo.

really really pisses me off.:twisted::twisted:

btw why don't banks allow you to strip or disable the track 2 / mag strip for transactions? seems silly as i've never used it in the last 3-4yrs and only some tellers want to swipe it are suspicious or the discovery thing at pnp or ebucks both of which can be done with a separate card

Just use a fridge magnet and do it yourself.

I had some fraud with a clothing store in the US.
FNB saw it and put 200k outstanding authorizations on the card and budget account. This was only lifted when I got a new card.
I haven't been charged anything yet.

Nope don't mind sharing.

#1

I usually use cash when I go through toll gates (I travel a lot for work). One particular occasion I forgot to draw cash before departing on my journey and I used my credit card through like 10 toll gates on the N17. A few days later I wake up to messages showing that 8k was spent on a flight on Ethopian airlines to Las Vegas. This was followed by several other transactions in various states across the US in a matter of minutes which is very odd. Anyway contacted my bank immediately and after an investigation I got my money back.

#2
About mid way through the year I started going to a particular watering hole once a week for quiz night. So I used my credit card a few times to pay for drinks etc. one of the nights the waiter tells me the machine he is using doesn't work with my Bank (strange) anyway I overlook and pay on a different machine (he went through the motions with the first machine though). Day later my card is used at takealot to a value of R3500 and another website used for buying airtime locally. These transactions didn't go through because of the one time password (OTP) that my bank has introduced. In any case I had to stop the card and get a new card.

This is very similar to #2 however, I am not really sure where they could have got my card details this time. I barely used the card due to my two previous experiences. I did pay for petrol with the card but the card didn't leave my sight. I used it online a few times. Anyway, it was ripped off again this time the guys bought stuff on Kalahari and some other random things but I didn't get any OTP's so I assume the transactions went through. Cancelled card, investigation completed and I got my money back.

And that is that. Quite annoying. At this point I am not using my Credit Card for anything.
