How do I check who a property belongs to before signing a lease?

How can I make sure that a property belongs to a person? I've signed a lease with the owner of the property. I just want to make sure that the property belongs to him before I pay the deposit and first month's rent.

I know it's unlikely to get scammed like this. I've been inside the apartment for a viewing and all, but it's still technically possible that the property doesn't belong to him.

Register on privateproperty.co.za if you haven't, then go here and start the process of buying a valuation for the property you are planning to rent. The screen before payment is required will tell you in whose name the property is registered.

Good idea to check beforehand. You can't even trust rental agencies these days...

In Cape Town the valuation information is available to the public via their websites.

No need to pay anyone anything.

Give us an idea of the city, and maybe their valuation roll is online which will have the owners details.

Aah indeed I missed the "screen before payment".

:)

Still you can get it at the source in CPT, not sure about the rest of the country.

DBN, JHB, CPT, Pretoria at the very least have their valuation rolls, which will have the owners name on it.

Pretty sure places like PE and EL do as well but you may have to hunt for it a bit.

For owner info no need to register just type in the Address, for more info you need to pay.

Wow, this can actually be used for things like finding the telephone number of a person if you know the address, if they have a uncommon enough surname that is not duplicated in a suburb, compare the name you find here against the telkom telephone directory (obviously the person has to have a working landline number). Stalker/crim paradise...

You can find this info on the Tshwane site as well the other day. If you know the street name and the area it's not difficult.
