how do i root my galaxy S??

Have recently been having problems with data being used up, but can't seem to find what is doing this!!
Seems the only way to install a firewall is to root the phone, but so far the links on the net I have found have been dead for the software required. any1 can assist me in rooting my phone or provide an alternative to stop this data usage??
