Hi guys,

How do the different fibre networks and ISPs operate amongst one another? I would assume that multiple networks can run fibre in the same area? If not, how does it work - first-come first-serve?

Also with ADSL we knew that Telkom was always involved but with fibre is it now not the same situation with fibre? Or does each Fibre ISP still need to purchase bandwidth from the Telkom overlords?

Metrofibre have installed in my area (Douglasdale), using MFN(Metro Fibre Networks I think) as an ISP for the first month and after that, I can use any other Fibre ISP on this network.

Just looking to understand a bit more how the fibre industry works in SA.

Thanks!

Providers will install where they know they can make money(affluent areas). No coordination currently so you have Telkom and Vumatel installing in same area.

Thanks koeksGHT,

Okay so no coordination, is there any regulation side from perhaps council building/construction regulations?

Thanks again

Wayleaves from the roads agencies, and that's about it.

Still have to get construction approval/restore what you dug to normal.

Actually, any telecoms company could lay ADSL cabling. Telkom was just the only one that was interested in doing so.

I can use most ISP's ADSL accounts on my FTTH. Only the ISP's that does not have a fibre offering seems to fail when connecting.

It varies from one infrastructure provider to the other. Those like DFA (Mostly used by Cybersmart afaik) are open access.
