Hi Guys/Girls,

I recently had my ADSL line installed and are are happy to finally be enjoying the benefits thereof (and btw, the Telkom tech's who installed my line were top, even worked overtime to make sure that i was up and running by the time i needed to go "live" - very welcoming indeed).

Never the less, as with anyone who uses the net at home, I would like the fastest possible speed that is available to me, which in SA is the "4Mbps" option as we all know (not bad).

Anyhow, I asked the tech if the exchange I'm connected to supports a 4Mbps line and he said yes :), needless to say I called Telkom to upgrade my 384 to the 4Mbps and was then informed by the consultant on the other end of the line, that my exchange only supports 512??:(...

What i want to know is, is there anyway to check the availability of a 4Mbps line in your area?? or in any area...and if not, what would be needed to upgrade the exchange to a 4Mbps line?

1st of all go to your nearest Telkom Direct or phone them and request that they test your line or better yet log a request for the 4 Mbps option. The info that they have is outdated on the system. I was also told my exchange could only support 512. They need to check if you synch properly ....

I finally got hold of the Technical manager in my area and spoke to him directly. They did a firmware update on my DSLAM (somewhere near my house) and all was well and I was upgraded to 4 meg. The exchange ussually supports higher speeds - just depends where u are situated. Remeber that they cannot always have an updated configuration install base as the infrastructure is huge.

But do yourself a favour and log a request and speak to someone in regards - Works for me.

Njoy!;)

Thanks for the update, i'm glad to see that something can be done at least. I did ask the consultant on the other end of the line to make a note that I want the upgrade on my line. I wonder if it's possible to maybe chat with the tech who installed my line and ask him to do all the checks? But to comment on what you said, I cannot understand how they can upgrade the exchanges and not update the system at the same time?

But thanks for the update and info, I'll definately give them a call as you've suggested.
