Me and the wife have this issue. Neither of us is particularly good at being neat or throwing stuff away. Not that we have a hoarders house or anything but we tend to keep stuff we don't need way too long. Now and then we go through a corner or a room and tidy/donate/chuck but it is not happening often enough. Funny how often I look at a cluttered shelf, see it is full of crap that I have not once used in 5 years. So why do I still have it? That is the question I guess.

The reality is the following might happen when you deal with your Stuff.

1. You realise how much crap you bought that you didn't need/use.
2. You will hopefully stop buying stuff you don't need/use
3. You will save money going forward
4. Give the stuff you no longer need away or sell it if still in good condition.

I just don't have enough time, but I'm busy getting rid of everything.
Found some tools worth a few grand.
Will have to chuck away my ZX80/81 to another hoarder soon.

My problem is I can't be bothered to sell my stuff in classifieds, as it's not easy to entertain strangers in my estate. I also don't know of any charity shops.

What I do is, every week on Bin Day, I throw some unwanted junk in with the garbage until it is full.

'Stuff' is the Devil! I am in the process of packing up to emigrate and the amount of useless STUFF I have accumulated over the years is staggering. The last time I moved house was to a farm and I remember scolding myself for all the stuff i had to move but thinking it was my last move and to a huge house/farm out buildings etc I thought this was the last time space would be an issue and I could become the ultimate hoarder.

Now things have changed and I am committing to a minimalistic future in my new life over the seas. Footloose and Fancy Free is the goal.

SPCA gets most of our stuff, also aiming for a more minimalist home.

We rent so every time we move we give away stuff so there is less stuff to move.

With clothes we have a policy that for every item coming in, an item or two has to leave..

I hate clutter and partner the same so that keeps it down. I’d say every quarter you should clear out a room and do bedrooms in spring and autumn when you stop out for winter/summer duvet.

Have you guys got suggestions for charity shops in Joburg that will take all my junk? Not just clothes, but odd things like watch straps (brand new), language course CDs, photo frames, etc. All in excellent condition.

Up to you of course (as it involves a bit of admin). If it is language course CD's, put it up on carbonite or here. I had donated some of my language courses to the nearest public library few years ago. I had got some of them via carbonite on a reasonably good deal.

Have big clear-outs now and then
8 large cartons of Tupperware or similar gone
5000 books ready to go
Cleared out 50+ boxes out the roof
Gave away 30 boxes of floor and wall tiles
Got rid of 4500 CDs and DVDs, kept 50 LP records
Another 10 cartons of bed linen, towels, etc to go to the housekeeper in Nyanga
We have a large house with plenty of cupboards. Nearly every one was full of stuff (been here 38 years)
Still too many clothes
Need to dispose of 100 bottles of medicine, etc from the bathroom. Looking for somewhere to take it in Cape Town s/suburbs

Facebook marketplace is 10 times faster than Gumtree, although not everything will find a buyer ASAP but it's the best place to sell stuff.

Had to move during the first lockdown here, so could only see the interior of the flat via video. Needless to say, we got duped a bit. Floor space is larger, but storage is about 25% less. Bright side is that we finally realised how much "stuff" we actually had and have sold quite a bit of it.
