How do you pick a new game

So I am facing the dilemma where I struggle to know what to buy and try next as a gamer. The budget is limited with all the family expenses so I don't like picking wrong. What I have tried of late has been a bit hit and miss. Checking out a game on youtube before hand by watching a lets play or two is definitely a winner for me but even knowing which title to check out is sometimes challenging. How do you guys pick?

Would be cool if there was a website that could somewhat predict taste based on past favourite games.

So for instance I could say these are a list of games I loved:
Diablo 2
Rome Total War
Master of Orion 2
Starcon 2
Xcom EU/EW
Civ IV
etc

And based on that it would say people that liked those games also liked X, Y, and Z. So does this exist anywhere that anyone knows of?

OR is just asking on a forum like this best. Any recommendations of the list above? Hearing a lot about Stellaris so I want to check that out at some point.

I add stuff to my wishlish as I find out about it and it looks interesting. Then, when they are on sale I read reviews, both on steam and metacritic. And some youtube videos. That way I missed some games which appear great at first, but end up being less good, like DA:I.

With that list, you may want to look at XCom 2, Civ 5/6, Endless Legend, Path of Exile and Grim Dawn.
I just bought stellaris last week as part of a humble bundle for $12 or something. Haven't installed it yet.

I typically first hear about games online, forums, E3 videos etc. Then I sometimes go through steam's discovery queue.

I follow this guy https://www.youtube.com/user/gameranxTV/videos who gives a pretty honest opinion of the good and the bad of the newer games.

That being said this year is going to be crazy with new games. Frostpunk/monster hunter (when it comes to pc)/state of decay 2 etc etc and last year ended with a bang from Divinity 2: Original sin/slay the spire/they are billions.

Its been a long time since there have been this many good games from proper developers in one year.

You're tastes differ completely from mine but look at reviewers that enjoy the same stuff you like.

Looking at kingdom come deliverance right now but the voice in my head says it's gonna be too slow for me even though it looks awesome

My friends got it and says its to infuriating to play at the moment. There is some save system where you have to earn enough to be able to save (basically save once every 1-3 hours) but the game crashes often.

So you basically end up redoing the same stuff over and over.

He said the game should be in Alpha and I should wait a year before buying.
