Hi all,

Does anyone here on Telkom's FTTH service know how their modem works? Are you able to access the modem's configuration page in any way? Is there a "stats" page like on xDSL?

Thanks.

Yes, you can access the modem's configuration page and there is a stats summary page, but nothing like a stats page similar to that of ADSL. I'm not using the POS router they gave me (it's actually a very nice Netgear Gateway router), purely because they messed up a lot of things with the setup I'm running and caused me a huge deal of inconvenience which I'm trying to sort out at the moment.

Rather use your own (like I do) just make sure it supports EWAN (with a dedicated WAN port at the back), and you should be good to go :)

Telkom FTTH includes a modem and a router.

Are you referring to the modem or the router?

How would you access the page? Is it the Huawei one the fibre goes into? Does the modem give out DHCP or do you need to assign a static IP.

Thanks

The fibre does not go into the Huawei router. It connects to the modem (Alcatel-Lucent) which passes through the connection to the router via a LAN port. The routers is then accessible at the default IP address depending on the model.

I am NOT talking about the router. I am talking about the white modem. Not the GPON device.

The way I understand it is that there's the thick black cable that goes into the passive white box that feeds to the white thing cable that then goes into the modem that then converts into copper and finally that connects to the router.

So Cable->GPON->Modem->Router

Looks like you are talking about the ONT device.

GPON stands for Gigabit Passive Optical Networks
ONT stands for Optical network terminal

Black fibre comes into a passive box
Yellow fibre cable comes out of passive into ONT
ONT converts optical to electrical (ethernet) into a router

black->yellow->ONT->router

Have not tried to connect to the ONT myself, suspect I wont be able to since it is locked down.

My installation use a Huawei ONT

Hi,

Had fiber installed a while ago. First of all...DONT SIGN THE 24month CONTRACT. I went with WA, telkom did exaclty the same to me, if i order through them its basically same day installed, BS. My buddy down the road went with telkom on their promise, he had telkom a full 2 weeks installed after me at WA. WA still had some lead time due to telkom installers though. Total time from order to install is about 3 week. Just sit tight.

Enjoy the fiber, it really is the future.

peace

Lol sorry wrong thread :)

I agree. Long term contracts are the worst. And the bundles that I have been quoted were unnecessarily expensive.

ISPAfrika 100Mbps Telkom FTTH line: R729pm
Afrihost 200GB capped account: R399pm
Afrihost Plus (to double data): R99pm

Total cost: R1227pm. Both line and data are month-to-month contracts.

I've been waiting almost 1.5 months for a Telkom FTTH home installation and have yet to even have someone call me to book an installation time. I received an order number the same day I applied, but that hasn't counted for much.

I have an existing TP Link TD W8970 wireless router which supports EWAN on one of its ports. I am hoping this will work on the Openserve FTTH network. I asked on of the Telkom techs and he says "Telkom are very specific as the network is GPON and not active Ethernet which most routers are configured for " Can some perhaps explain what he means

So I emailed Afrihost support and they claim that Afrihost Capped accounts won't work on Fibre (via OpenServe).. interesting, well I can happily cancel my accounts and they will lose due to an idiot support person if they wish
