He did not know it's that big (to download). It's an expensive lesson, but he now have your super knowledge, gained through personal experience...and hopefully the knowledge that comes with Google.

If I am not mistaken, Hitman is a "Steam" game and steam will show you the size of the download. :)

The question / comment I have is this: Yes, I know there is a warning on the packaging that downloading may be required, but is this clear enough in terms of our Consumer Protection legislation? What is the point of buying a disc, if the game is actually unplayable without doing a 10GB plus download?
Eventually we went back and bought the game for PS4, did another 15GB update, fortunately this time over ADSL. So that is how we got close to R10000.

I believe most people buy it electronically nowadays via platforms such as Steam/Origin etc... I'd be surprised if that wasn't the majority method today. The only caveat to that is there's no tangible non-electronic "gift" to give someone in this manner, which is why I suspect places that sell hard copies still bother. That and collectors items are the only purposes the hard copy fulfills in my view. Also people without ADSL or fibre playing AAA titles are surely in a very small minority.

In my view everything you did wrong would not have even been a consideration for those a little more experienced with gaming and tech in general. So it can be difficult to understand your position. But as a layman in the gaming and data world I guess these traps are still very possible to fall into.

Just consider this a crash course lesson in which you learned:
1. Cost and restrictions (or lack thereof) of mobile data in SA
2. Setting a warning and hard cap on your mobile data (via your phone software or via the service provider)
3. PC requirements for gaming titles (And the challenge/cost of PC vs console gaming in general)
4. And if you read the responses, some insights into Windows updates and tethering your phone (Which if you enable metered connection on Windows 10 via correct wifi profile you can avoid)
5. Updates on gaming titles in the 21st century (It is an absolute norm now)
6. Electronic vs hard copy method

You've basically gone to geek school "for dummies" at the cost of 10k :D

Yes a very expensive lesson. And thank you for posting it for others' to take note of.

But as usual there are two sides to the story here. The mobile operators should be more proactive about these things even if a user has opted for an "open" account. A warning or two may have alerted OP to what was going on.

As to the CPA? Can't see what else should be added to the packaging .. The warning is there.

As to software updates? Well the same applies . Anyone who does not understand what the cost of ownership of ANY software is has only himself to blame.
