So I am trying to do a SIM swap because I am switching to a nano sim.
I know, I could cut my current card down but I thought buying a original one and then doing a swap would be easier.
So I follow all the rediculous amounts of steps, and listen to the voice over tell me what I need, then it says,
Press 0 to be transferred to one of our service champions!
I press 0, and it gives me a message
All our operators are currently busy. Please call again later.
[angryrant] Excuse me? Later? When? What time exactly is later? Why not just put me on hold (and while they are at it, have one of those things that says where you are in line) I mean what the hell kind of service is this? If it weren't for the bad Cell C signal in my area, I would switch to them while I am at it. [/angryrant]

How do you do a sim swap over the phone in the first place?

Well first of all you have to be on prepaid to do this, on contract is a different story.
[I don't do contracts, as I have never found one that fits my needs, R100 airtime, or however many minutes that translates to, 2 GB of data, and ZERO SMS's. I ain't paying extra for SMS's b!tch! Who the hell SMS's nowadays anyways. Complete rip off!]

You buy a sim card in a store, let them RICA it, then you phone the customer service line and give them some details, I think that it included:

  1. ID Number
  2. Date of last recharge and amount recharged
  3. Name and Surname
  4. Three commonly dialed numbers
  5. Plan that you are on (MTN Zone, Per Second etc)

I did finally get through, and the whole process was done by a rather exhausted sounding lady on the phone amidst a veritable orchestra of background noise, but she got things done.
I got an sms on my current (old) sim card that said that a sim swap was requested, if you did not authorize it, contact MTN immediately, but bottom line is that I needed to give them a whole lot of information before they considered it, so don't worry, its not just a phone call to CS and then presto sim swap.
