Hello Everyone.

End of last month i applied for ADSL. The call centre say that they are assigning a port, the project is expected to be completed 31 August. This is more than a month just to get a port assigned.

In you experiance, does it help to ask for a sooner date?
How many times have they missed this date and taken even longer?
When i have a port, what is the average time to install?

I know these are difficult questions, I am trying to get a rough idea of everyone else's experiance.

Thanks guys

Sincerely,

LOL ZA_medic. I'm on the same bus. "Ports are available, but we're completing a port project, and still need to assign ports".

I applied on 23 June.

When did you apply BlueCollar?

I have to feel for one of my co-workers. Applied in April, still 0 (Average IQ of Telkom)

Heh... I applied for my ADSL in feb. Ports became available on the 6th of July, and they told me they were starting a project to assign a port for me. My port finally got assigned on the 28th of July, and then they told me 11 working days to activate it. It got activated a couple of days ago (hooray!!!), so yea. Be prepared for a bit of a wait... I phoned them every day, went to a telkom store, laid a complaint, all sorts of things. Nothing made any difference.

I applied in March (the beginning i might add) n had the same bs story. Port project needed to be completed. They told me every month it wud b completed by the end of the month. ie: It was suppose to be done on the 28 March, April, May, June, July, etc. Still nothing. I phoned em n they dont even have a date now. Mayb dats a good sign, but u neva no wif Telkom. So expect a long w8 ZA_medic these things apparently take a LONG time to get done.

Hmmm....

One of my co-workers and I were discussing the state of things in South Africa. I've just been over to Holland to visit a friend, (who is paying 30 Euro/month for an uncapped 16Mbit line, sigh), and we came up with a great South African catch phrase. I think we should stick it up in all the international airports - "Welcome to South Africa. **** you."

I am getting the same damn reply when I phone telkom: "Ports are available, but we're completing a port project, and still need to assign ports." I applied on 05/07/2006 and is still waiting. Maybe we should raid the Telkom ADSL Call-Centre. :D

Ok, heres an idea. We start a pot, everyone who has a port project pending contributes R100, the LAST person to get a port gets the pot. :D

No really, why do we put up wit this!?
I say lets all go and set up a protest@ the nearest Telkom Direct Shop and break stuf ;)

Applied for my DSL 3wks ago...still waiting. :(
Does anyone really know what the techies do at the exchange?
If so, can it really take Weeks!? Assuming there are ports available.

I rate those "techies" are having a great time..... telling the boss that it's a long procedure, meanwhile it takes like 30 minutes to install a line, then they go have a party at the closest bar... :p

Generally getting about 2 done per day, if not less

If only we had another option but, we are stuck with those incompetent sons of a motherless goat.

According to telscum I will get a port assigned on monday. Holding thumbs for that. Then the techie is going to tell me when he will come and install the line at the exchange. I applied last friday. Seems to be going faster than expected. Probally shouldn't get my hopes up.;)

ZA-Medic, you shud look up this thread and read Lewstherin's comment: [post=599304]click me![/post]

It seems that there is a real sinister reason why we all have to wait such a long period b4 we can get our Ports assigned. Telkom...cannot help but hate 'em. :D

lewstherin said in that thread:

However if it turns out that there really aren't any ports, then no kind of application will get you a port until an upgrade occurs - thankfully Telkom hasn't gotten into the habit of kicking low end subscribers already connected off ADSL to make way for higher paying business customers...yet.

They don't quite do that, but when I was trying to get ADSL there were no ports. I had a big whine to the Telkom person who handles our work account and lo & behold later that day there WAS a port for me. So some other poor sap got bumped to the back of the queue I reckon.

So, if you know any of the local Telkom people, or deal with them through your work, try pleading and whining, or just drop 'em and bend over, if that might help! ;)

Dammit, If only i had Iburst signal i would not be goig through this. I had iburst in Midrand, what a pleasure. Since i moved to JHB South Nothing!

with the SNO expected to laumch 31 August, i wonder how long it will be before they launch consumer services?

Will they be using Telskums infrastructure? If so, wont telskum still be the ones assigning the ports? And what the hell is a port anyways?
