I lost my sim card when I went on holiday a few weeks ago. I am on a company contract so i requested a sim card but it didn't reach me by the time i got back to SA. Instead of having to wait a few more days for it I went to vodacom and requested a new sim. I did this yesterday but my phone still says 'no service'
how long is this supposed to take?
The same thing happened to me the last time i tried to change my sim to a smaller sim and it took over 2 days and a few phone calls to get it sorted out.
I haven't made any phone calls yet… Shouldn't this be easier?

Yes it should be easier... but they do this on purpose to "eff the customer around". This, and number porting, they will drag their feet as much as possible. Only in South Africa.

I am battling with this same problem on MTN... several calls later I am told to "wait another 24 hours"
If it doesn't work tomorrow I am going to take my current SIM and cut it to make it fit. I haven't got time for nonsense.

It usually takes less than 4 hours to do a SIM-SWAP...

So this is what you should do

COMPLAIN ON www.hellopeter.com about whichever company is giving you hassles...

They usually take their hellopeter complaints really seriously ...

I have two contracts, but have only been using the one (note the second one was stolen and I never went for a new sim). The one in use has now reached its end and I do not wish to upgrade it, but stop the contract completely and continue on the second one, as it still has a about a year left.

I am with Altech on MTN (worst decision of my life) and when I went in to the store to do a sim-swap on the second sim, they told me I needed to have my ID and three months bank statement as well.

Can this really be necessary/true? I am already a client of theirs and I am not applying for a new contract??

I am passed the 24 hours now and still no active sim!
I called vodacom at 12 and the lady there said it takes 24 BUSINESs hours. Think that's not true though.
she said she would contact the store I did it at and make them push faster.
Nope nothing 4 hours later so I called the store myself and the lady said because it's a company contract she has to override something on the system (umm why couldn't the First Lady that did the sim swap for me not do that?) she said it should be up and running in two hours. It is not 4 hours later and I still don't have a working number here.
I'm really frustrated.
Tried turning my phone on and off but nothing is working

When I performed a SIM SWOP on a Sunday took 2 days but had followe it up and Vodacom had to submit another ticket! The next day everything was operational again was afraid at first I lost my number.

If it is contract then it is a different story, this was done on prepaid.. They have to send the supporting documents to SP. Some incompetent sales agent didn't do their job! Normally I would stay in the store until the necessary documents were faxed through to head office.

If you are a criminal wanting to get into a bank account then it only takes a few mins apparently...

As per usual, always very easy for the criminals.. very hard for the subscriber.
It cost me 2 hours in an MTN store on Saturday to sort this out. They cannot explain why it didn't go through. I did see on the screen a bunch of errors. My explanation is it is their flaky i.e. written by the lowest bidder, software systems, not being able to do the correct procedures with the network databases i.e. things like HLR and GCSN.

From the network side I have deep knowledge how this works, what happens frequently is a cheap 3rd party gets given a task to create a web frontend (for the drones and slaves in the call centres and cellphone shops to use) to talk to this system, which invariably involves knowledge about SS7, which is very lacking in this country. I have written code to do such a thing, for billing purposes, which works very well, but it required a good deal of R&D and a good reference of SS7. Since many programmers cannot even understand HEX or BINARY, I am not surprised this and LNP (local number portability) is such a monumental COCK-UP
