How many South Africans have moved to Portugal via its Golden Visa programme

Since the programme opened in 2012, Portugal’s Golden Visa (GVP) has been a popular choice for South Africans seeking offshore investment and European residency, says Andrew Rissik, a managing director at Sable International.

More than 10,000 Golden Visas have now been issued by the Portuguese government

That is a massive number of high valued taxpayers gone out of South Africa. Those who can afford €280,000 - €500,000 as an investment for the Visa.

That being said, Portugal also has the D7 Visa. This visa is much cheaper and easier to obtain and also gives you Permanent Residency and access to all European Shengen countries. All you need is a small business or investment or pension fund generating the minimum wage in Portugal (which is around €800 a month). You also need to have 12 months of funds in your bank account and a rental agreement in place. The whole process is completed within 30-60 days and the Visa issued. No investments or millions of Rands needed.
