And here I thought we were living pretty damn comfortably on a whole lot less than 1 million a year.

With 1 million I would consider our household filthy rich.

Obviously people have very different expectations.

Jislaaaaaaikit. The numbers in this thread scare me big time and I have an excellent job. I don't know how other people do it, especially the poor. Just shows the MASSIVE divide in SA.

Different expectations and entitlement, can barely believe what I am reading.

Only read the first page. Agree with 2mil per household. 1mil doesn't cut it anymore.

I think there are a lot of school kids and students replying to this thread, no practical experience of the job market and real world living...

Exactly. I struggle saving to be able to retire, paying off a bond, two small cars, house maintenance... It's the reason we haven't had kids yet, want to make sure I'm financially secure first.... And almost 35 :(

Yeah. I earn quote a bit less than a bar per annum (no dependents) and I live quite comfortable. Even took a "pay cut" for better working hours and traffic and living even more comfortably now :p

If I earned 1mil pa I'd be living comfortably somewhere in Westcliff

People make it on far less but I wouldn't say comfortably (no ways we'll be going out to restaurants etc. as frequent as I am doing now...I'm actually a bit wasteful :( ). That is why future mrs. Hamster will be somebody with a job (even if she is secretary earning only a couple of grand a month). None of this stay at home housewife bull****.

Our first (and from my view last) kid arrived very early on Tuesday morning I'm 31 and was also waiting to be financially secure.

I overpay my modest house so it can be mine and not the bank's faster. One car and one brand new motorcycle.

I think my retirement plans are well and truly in order for the lifestyle I'm living now and I'm quite happy with my lifestyle as it is.

And our household income is still pretty far from a bar.

The interesting thing and probably the same reason many people get themselves into crazy debt is that if I we were managing a million a year we would still be living almost exactly the same lifestyle but aiming for early retirement instead so that we have more time to spend with our family.

I fully intend to "retire" by 45 in the sense that I no longer want to work do a boss just to generate money but instead do something to keep myself busy.

Seriously?

at R1m per year before deductions I wouldn't be living well, I'd be living like a bloody king.
Agreed. My father earns around that much, had three kids and a live at home spouse. No fancy sports cars, but do you need those? Multiple properties invested in over the years. No 3D TV either. Rarely eat out - about two times a year. Got kids through school and university. Still subsidizing them with reduced rent, if they stay on trust owned property. Yearly travel vacations. My father lives a bloody good life earning that much. I honestly can't see how you could be struggling earning that much.

I'm happy for you, but we obviously have very different ideas for retirement, and what's comfortable.

My debt is below 2bar, my assets and possessions are closer to 4bar, excl retirement. And I don't feel my future is secure enough yet.

ITT: some people realising that they'll never be financially comfortable and criticising others for even discussing the topic of wealth.

Donnerdag! So far from 1 bar it's not even funny. So this is how the other half lives. We'll done. I have lots of work to do. To save more, not to keep up with people I don't know and don't care about. I often wonder how people do it but that's their business. I can only keep my household ticking over.

Sometimes lifestyles become more luxurious to match money coming in.

Some might eat rib-eye, others might eat fillet.

With money enough is as good as a feast.....but we all need enough.
