I want to sign up at a gym, but would like a personal trainer for the first month or so.

Do they charge per lesson?

How much? I don't want to spend more than R900 a month.

I was with one in somerset west, if you buy upfront its R200 per session otherwise R240. Very good idea to get one when you start out and dont know what to do.

I had one once a week and then eventually once in two weeks and then stopped using him.

That's not bad considering I expect my gym session to be about an hour.

2-3 gym sessions per week * 150 aint that bad.

Maths fail there? 6 sessions per month, max. so 2 sessions per week, for weeks, then you do the last week without.

Around R300/hour private (meaning not at Virgin Active - VA), and around R220-250 /h at the likes of VA or Planet fitness.

Then I wonder if they give special discounts for their regulars, I had to go to the new VA in the middle of Sandton (Alice Lane), I saw some guys with a personal trainer almost 4 ot of 5 days of the week, that must cost a bag full of money every month......

When you sign up, you should get a personal trainer free for the first lesson, after their prices differ according to experience, anything from 200 an hour.

Depends where you go. Expect anything between R120 - R300 per session.

That's expensive.
Rather buy a 12 month subscription to men's health!

They not allowed to give special discounts. They have to pay a % to the gym for using their facilities, but I suppose they will take a cut to keep existing clientele. Its a really tough industry, and even if you look like you were carved out of stone by Michelangelo himself, its still no guarantee you are going to be a successful trainer. Its piss easy money, but it only works if you are single (long hours), and have an outgoing personality.
