I was thinking of applying for a gun license. A quick search on google gave me the requirements and the saps fee. But how much will it actually cost me in total, I mean for the training, gun safe etc.
No plans to buy a gun anytime soon but since saps can take a long time to issue a license so I thought will just apply for it and think about buying a gun once I have the license.

First you choose / buy the gun ( some shops want a deposit some want the full price ) , then you apply for a licence ( approx R170) but as part of that you need to do a competency test which is a few hundred RAND depending where you go . There are also service providers who will do the paperwork and motivation for you ... for a fee of course

I might just buy a cheap second hand gun from the gunsite forum maybe. I prefer outsourcing such work so I might just go for that. How much should it cost approximately?

Depends on the firearm you purchase.
Just keep in mind that if you purchase a firearm from a person (and not a dealer), the usual practice is that you pay the current owner for the firearm, and he hands that firearm to a mutually agreed dealer for safekeeping. You will be liable for storage charges at the dealer until you have licensed the firearm - usually between R100 and R150 per month.

My advise to you is to start with firearm competency - this is a prerequisite to getting your firearm license. The training and test will cost you around R1,200-R1,600. Thereafter you submit the relevant paperwork at SAPS and wait for your competency card (maximum time is supposed to be 90 working days). Once you have competency, then buy your firearm and license it (another 3 to 4 months).

Any idea the cost of these? Already completed the training, just need to apply for competency.

Theres no paperwork for competency. Just fill in some forms. Applying for the license is paperwork, gun owners of south africa have lawyers that will help you with that paperwork and at a reduced rate if you are a member

No motivation required for your competency SAPS application , only for the firearms application.

Depending on where you buy your firearm - Safari Outdoors includes the motivations in their purchase price , Otherwise its usually around R800 for a proper motivation written by a lawyer. I would recommend Pretoria Arms AKA Dave Sheer.

Thats odd, Went to SAPS and was told to get letters from neighbor, family, friends etc explaining how much of a good and honest person I am.

They are supposed to give you a form for everyone to fill out for your character references.

Seriously though. I've been told that it it almost impossible to get a license these days?

How true is this?
