How much does it cost to get a gun license

Depends on the firearm you purchase.
Just keep in mind that if you purchase a firearm from a person (and not a dealer), the usual practice is that you pay the current owner for the firearm, and he hands that firearm to a mutually agreed dealer for safekeeping. You will be liable for storage charges at the dealer until you have licensed the firearm - usually between R100 and R150 per month.

My advise to you is to start with firearm competency - this is a prerequisite to getting your firearm license. The training and test will cost you around R1,200-R1,600. Thereafter you submit the relevant paperwork at SAPS and wait for your competency card (maximum time is supposed to be 90 working days). Once you have competency, then buy your firearm and license it (another 3 to 4 months).
I will be following this route, sounds easier.
Any suggestions on where I can get this training in cape town?

strange with all the requirements and licences and costs and motivations,
crime is super high, and still quite easy to get a Hold of a Fully Automatic Weapon (AK47), that I assume is illegal.

I guess Guns dont Kill people, paperwork, money and time kills people faster.

That's one of those urban legends that refuse to die.

Everyone claims they know a guy who knows a guy that can get an AK for R500. Except they can't.
Jip. I have money now, not one contact can get me one.

My gripe is the "know it all's in the gun community".
You even get the "go to Acapulco, they write your exams for you just pay a few extra ZAR."

I got happy for no reason it seems, I went to the police station to get my competency certificate and they said they dont have Toner to Print ! check back in 2 weeks.
Not unusual I'm afraid.

Took me 3 attempts to submit my last license application. First load shedding, then power is on, but system is down. and then they ran out of ink. It's part of the test, only Zen masters get gun licenses, everyone else loses their **** eventually and cause a scene.

Causing a scene in a police station is not advised.

Don't you have a small laser printer to haul up there - or borrow one?

Or do they have facilities to email it to you - I suppose that's asking a bit much :)

Thats odd, Went to SAPS and was told to get letters from neighbor, family, friends etc explaining how much of a good and honest person I am.
That's correct. I just renewed 3 firearm licenses and I had to have a form completed by one of my neighbors and another by my spouse stating that I am a model citizen non violent etc and suitable to be issued with a firearm license. My renewals took just over a year to process
