How much does it cost to get a gun license

That's a bummer. I don't know how you are checking, but for me the Safari app was very inconsistent so I just checked the SAPS website directly instead.
SAPS website.....

daily.....

depressing...

I'm thinking about getting a bigger safe. If I buy and install one properly using the provided bolts that is SABS and SANS approved for gun and ammo storage, like this Xpanda, do I need to inform SAPS?

I'd double check with the DFO.

Why? When a license gets approved it gets done on certain info provided by you.

Hence why I updated my SAPSA DSS. Licenses were approved on SAPSA and not on Natshoot.

I personally don't see it as an issue, as you just went bigger. But DFO to confirm.

I sent in photo's with the application obviously, but they never inspected or visited on either of my applications. Guess I'll drop them an email to be sure.

We can only hope that Daily Maverick returns the courtesy and publish his response.

UPDATE

I've received a message from Jonathan Deal, he responded by saying the letter to the Daily Maverick was predictably ignored.

It's unfortunate, but expected I guess.

Hi All, I am in the process of doing my Firearm training/competency, and need some advise.

I am getting mixed messages in terms of the approval process, do I need to take the people along that are going to do the "witness statements" or does a letter suffice?

Secondly, how long does it take to get approved nowadays?

You are getting mixed messages because the message is mixed.

It depends on your DFO. Some accept letters only, some do interviews only, and some do both.

Mine did both. Interview with wife, letters for the rest. (Well not letters, but the specific character witness questionnaire on some SAPS form)

And it should take around 3-4 months to get approved. But that can vary wildly.

Further to my answer above. I've attached the form. Can't hurt to get 3 people to fill that in. It will probably suffice. If you are married, 1 needs to be your spouse, the other 2 can be by anyone.

The situation was identical for both my partner and I. DFO called my partner and me in for in-person interviews regarding our respective applications, and both of our other witnesses were telephonically contacted.
