How much drivers tip petrol attendants in South Africa

Let's don't forget the discussion to follow. There is no need for petrol attendants and no reason to tip someone for something you already paid for, never mind being highly taxed on, and something you could do yourself.

And they just got a raise.

But while many don’t mind giving the ‘standard’ 10% to their waiter at a restaurant, or a spare R2 or R5 to their local car guard, it would seem petrol attendants get the short-end of the stick.
Hang on - Waiters and pump jockeys provide an actual service. Car guards are a blight.

They get paid a wage to put fuel in my car because the government says I am not allowed to do it. So they don't get a tip for doing that.

If they help out with the tyres or something like that, I will give them a tip if I have the change.

We don't need pump jockeys. I got used to doing it myself in Europe and the USA, here we have to endure a maskless wallie who cannot speak English and wants to know how I will pay before he will move to undo the nozzle. Then when he is finished dispensing petrol he drops the heavy nozzle and puts a big ding and scratch in the car. On complaining, the petrol garage owner points to a sign which says "no liability" and walks off. When I ask him about a mask for this useless guy, he raises his middle finger

I called BP and complained. The lady did not even ask my name, she was so disinterested

They do get the short end of the stick from many people... I don't carry cash on me and I pay by card for the fuel.

I generally would only tip if they do more than just put fuel in the car anyway.

Fuel stations should use card machines which can accept tips, like restaurants.

Yeah no... That would be a huge negative from me.

I am not a fan of tipping period and having the attendant asking when paying by card would just make me even more against the concept of tipping.

I have no issues with tipping. The issue is I don't carry cash.

I'm all for digital solutions, but I'm not gonna register for every Pay solution under the sun.

Would be easier if you can just add a tip to the bill like you do in restaurants...

Depends what I got on me. Usually about R5 to about R20 plus some glucose biscuits. We buy glucose biscuits and stash it in the car for the beggars or if someone is starving in the car.

I don't drive.

I never tip and I can't see any logic in doing so. The petrol attendants are paid a salary to put fuel in (a portion of the fuel price is already allocated for that purpose), check tyre pressures, etc.

I can understand the restaurant industry is a little different because waiters/waitresses are primarily remunerated via tips and not the business owner and they wait on people to please their whims and fancies for a lengthy period of time.

Will we be expected to tip bank tellers and cashiers at the local P&P next?!

Try to tip at least R10, not just for fuel but if they check the tyres, water or oil then yeah, happy to give..

Get your lazy ass out of your car and wash your own windows or check your oil and tyre pressures. The petrol attendants are there to fill your car ... that's it.

I've often checked my own tyre pressures and I never let them check my oil or water. I don't trust them or their equipment (carry my own tyre pressure gauge because on several occasions I've ended up with over or under inflated tyres). I also often tell them to leave my windows dirty. I'm not a lazy ass but why tip? They get paid a salary to do their jobs. I'd actually be pleased if we got rid of petrol attendants altogether so we can do it all ourselves. Why should we be paying a premium for something we can do ourselves like overseas?

If they clean my window and ask to check tires etc I usually do R15 -20 if they do the bare minimum I just pay the fuel. Its getting harder though as I hardly pay with cash anymore so small denominations are in short supply.
