depends where you get hijacked and if you want to be. Not everyone wants to be stranded in some dodge area and a good % of the hijacking victims at wrong times end up worse off handing over vehicle than making a dash for it. I can see this being useful for medical doctors.

The article doesnt say it.. but the reason for armoring the vehicle was not a standard theft scenario and i doubt the students was the target.

You can just drive away when someone armed tries to kidnap you? (if they try to kidnap you while you are in your vehicle obviously)

If someone wants to kidnap you, the last thing he would want is to hurt you, else he cannot claim a ransom. So he won't shoot to begin with...
