Pretty much opinion of most folks who I know that hunt. Only big 5 animal worth it is a wildebeest and even them most folks would rather go for a doe of something.

Erm.... Wildebeest certainly isn't part of the big 5.

A game ranger recently told me that 25% of a male Baffalo was sold at auction for 25 Million+ here in EC. I can't remember the exact number but whole the animal was worth more than 1 Billion, it's mind blowing.

I understand that it is breeding stock and genetics play a role but it is still very difficult to understand especially when this article puts the value of a buffalo trophy at $12500 -$17000.

It's hard to comprehend that such a huge value is being put on a animal when so many people on this planet live in such extreme poverty.

These estimates must be old in comparison: http://businesstech.co.za/news/general/67870/most-expensive-animals-sold-in-sa/

It's reminds me of an analogy I picked up somewhere or other. When people hoard so much stuff it's way beyond anything they will ever need or use we label them as mentally disturbed but when people do the same thing with money we label them successful and make them our leaders.

It's easy to understand though who wouldn't want billions and not let it go. I am happy to not have the responsibility of wealth beyond reasonable need because I would definitely want to keep it and watch it grow but the guilt would be too much I wouldn't be able to enjoy it. As it is I struggle with my privilege sometimes imagine being on that level.

Not many of that in our country

Not sure if serious.... but what I mean is a female of some buck ie: Gemsbok, Nyala, Kudu etc. They are the cheaper meat to shoot/hunt as males are still regarded as trophies.

We have cows\ewes.

Seems the cutoff is a Nyala - anything smaller is a ewe\ram and anything bigger is a cow\bull.

The americans with their deer have doe's.

But you are right, mostly the females of the species are cheaper (depends on the farmer though - if he wants to keep his stock of females the price would be bumped to "discourage" the hunting of females). With a Gemsbok however the females might also be a trophy, the horns might be thinner than a male but can sometimes be longer.

Very true. The very rich and wealthy are like they're in a competition to see who can make the most money, at the costs of others lives. They don't care who's lives they ruin.

Well you either a trophy hunter or you are not ... I am not... so I only hunt what I am prepared to eat ....

I also support the view that one can hunt as part of conservation and animal density control ... Then one hunts what the land owner designates should be hunted, provided of course it fits with what I am prepared to eat ....

I'm pro hunting, always have always will be.

But there is no sport in hunting the Big 5. There is just no need for it. I would say that the money generated from Big 5 hunting does do wonders for conservation, but limit the amount of permits to entice breeding for conservation not your bank balance. Leopard... I mean I have only seen one in the wild in all my years going to the KNP. How they allow people to hunt them is beyond my scope of reasoning.
