How much money do you earn? And how do you spend it?

What is insane by SA standards?

On the very “experienced” dev salary dip, in my experience it’s primarily an issue when glass ceilings are hit. When a developer realizes that they can’t really make more and/or get promoted from where they currently are, there is little incentive to keep up on things or learn new tech, which eventually bites them when they move jobs. Also, since in SA management is usually a pay tier over developers, there is some selection bias due to ambitious people moving into management in order to progress their career and/or pay.

There is a big discrepancy here between SA and places like Silicon Valley here (I would say that Europe falls somewhere in the middle). One of the reasons SV is so successful is that they manage to keep very experienced developers engaged in terms of both work and pay (developers can get and/or exceed management salaries), which allows them to develop and leverage this advanced skill set effectively.

R80k per resource, per week for in-house. It was to add a number to a list and for testing. The code would've been seconds. Testing would've been longer but primarily done by the testing team.
It's definitely been up there in terms of resourcing costs I've seen, vs work performed.

Hmm, corporates and their funny money internal budgeting .. seen similar figures at large assurers even actual developers were paid way less .. though might not be the case year. Financial software development can be lucrative with consulting gigs to large corporates .. just under 2 bar p.a. not impossible.

I'm well under R70k as a software dev with about 12 years experience.

Raised the 'shortfall' with management recently and got slightly bigger % increase than company average, but still well short of several recruiters/companies were offering on job specs.

It goes up to R85k based on those, but for a good job I'd probably settle for R75k.

If only I didn't hate interviews eh?

I'll update this with new numbers sometime.

Been a bit erratic of late.
Moved house and kid #2 entered the picture.

The SA economy is turning down which means my $ to R ration pushes me over R1.5 mill.; too bad that means vokol for me here except that when I sell my house in SA I get 1 peanut instead of 2.

I think the hardest thing about a job in SA is that you have to keep pushing for high increases each year just to keep up with inflation. This very quickly makes you hit a glass ceiling as at a certain point companies just feel like the numbers going out are quite high. I went for an interview about 4-5 years ago and the guy interviewing me said he would never pay a dev R50k a month, and now many senior devs earn more than that.

Agreed. I'm pretty stuffed at the moment when it comes to increases. 95th percentile, I'm told. So essentially I'm overpaid. The only way for me to go up is to move into an executive position of some form, for which I don't feel entirely ready yet.

LOL.. what a short sighted poephol.4-5 years ago, I knew guys that earned x2 what "he wouldn't pay"...
As a designer including UI design I was laughed at in an interview for asking R20k. This was around 2012.

Exactly my case, try asking a increase when you're barely 30 and in the top 3 earners of your company (the two others being over 40)...
