I use an account aggregator that tries to do the assignments automatically. Inevitably it lands up confusing a car purchase with a hair cut and a levy payment with a restaurant dinner. I just gave up and look at expenditure vs income.

Thanks for sharing. Always interesting to get some insight into how someone else spends their money.

Here's mine (no numbers - think the relative thickness of each is visual enough). It represents my monthly budget.

'Surplus' is basically money spent on eating out, clothes and other.

I use the 22Seven app, which also tries to figure out what goes where based on descriptions etc.

It also gets a few things wrong and doesn't do so well with transfers between my own accounts. Having said that I haven't really 'trained' it to know better. But I couldn't be bothered. What it is useful for however is a spreadsheet dump of all transactions on all my accounts at the end of every month.

Here's mine, excluding tax because I'm lazy... so my CTC = net salaries + medical aid + provident contributions.

Some include allowances to be realistic about occasional expenses: "Travel budget" / "Spending" / "Building Renovation".

Now just need to figure out what to do with "Savings".

Cool looking app.

I built an Excel sheet that I can import FNB statements into. It then auto categorizes expenditure based on keywords. But I'll give this a go.

13,5 after med aids and pension taxes
After everything i barely make it through the month, need to move to JHB for a better salary

Very tempted to build a DIY solution and practice some python/pandas skills along the way. Or throw it into alteryx or something.

I use to track with slips (was no solutions pre-2011?) then 22Seven came along and started using that (back then you needed to pay for it..).

It’s not 100% auto though (aggregated sorting doesn’t work for everyone.. think gmail category & spam sort.. slap in your custom and yay) but if you gonna spend time on your own program, well you need 1/4 of that initially on 22Seven and 1/8th a few months later with nice interfaces. They also very open to suggestions albeit they go thru dev phases..

I can’t imagine why anyone would want to do it manually other than privacy concerns.
