Medical Aid: R 7,192.00 :(

Medical aid is becoming really unaffordable in this country.
If people in their 30's and 40's can barely afford it now then there is no way that most people will be able to afford medical aid when they retire.

You pay those figures and before you're even half way through the year you're into a self payment gap or hit some other stupid limit.
I'm seriously considering a downgrade to hospital plan plus gap cover and investing the rest.
I've paid enough for Discovery's luxurious offices and executive perks.

+1, Another thing in other countries, you have national health and it's better than our private hospitals here... Another negative about ZA.

2? You sure its not overkill?

That's the fixed discovery rate for that plan.

No, it's not overkill. As you get older, things start getting more expensive. I'm not prepared to compromise on healthcare in this country, I want the best - and most specialists charge at least 3x the accepted medical aid rate nowadays. If you don't have cover for that, it's gonna hurt!

2, classic comprehensive.

Don't you mean Executive?

Classic Comprehensive is 2772 (main member) + 2622 (adult dependent) = R5394
Executive is 3410 + 3410 = R6820 (plus I'm assuming Vitality to get the figure of R7192)

You're not taking MSA contribution into account:

2772+2622+1798 (MSA)

Fair enough, I wholeheartedly agree on a top quality medical aid in S.A. I've been on classic comprehensive for most of my teen/adult life and have had to use it quite a bit, and I've never had a day's trouble with a claim.

Ah okay.
That's a lot of money so I hope you're getting your money's worth. :wtf:
I can't afford or justify to spend one third to half of my salary on a medical aid so I guess those who can pay are going to have to bear with 10%+ increases every year until they die.
I don't see this ending well for private medical aids.

We have good years and bad years.
The MSA is my money anyway, so there's no nett impact of that. The rest I view as insurance (which is what it is, really).
One year I had kidney stones and my wife had to have 4 tooth implants. That was 120k right there in a couple of months.

Yep, and wait till something like the big C strikes and you'll be very grateful to have proper medical aid.
