How much money do you earn? And how do you spend it?

In a capitalist society some people become rich while other NEED to stay poor.

Not all in a capitalist society can be well-off.

All is based on effort. If you work hard you will become rich.

But then comes relativity. If you work hard you will be well-off.

But if someone work better than you ... you have to work harder.

And if you work harder, someone else will work even more ...

But there is only so much money to go around

In the end you'll have a situation where people are working their asses off but they will get little to no compensation because relativity plays a DECIDING role.

In 2008 you could get a car, a house, Woolies food, and a blisteringly fast 56k dialup connection for R8k.

If you earned R8k in 2008, you could literally hear dem panties drop.

Well not quite, but I get your point.

This was quite an eye opener, my salary versus inflation since 2009. I moved careers at the end of 2011, hence the large jump.

Okay, so some changes.

Doing zero on bond myself - wife's problem. Paying around 3.5k per month in travel. This includes Gautrain parking and fairs.

Internet is still about the same and insurance is up to R3k as we bought a new car for the wife a few months ago. No debt on either vehicles.

Cellular is down to around R700pm.

I chuck 15-20k at savings (couple of unit trusts and such) per month.

28 years old with nett of R41k. Missus pays for levy, medical aid and rates and taxes and electricity and then the aforementioned bond. She earns more than me though I'm actually not sure exactly how much.

Netting R47k now. Difference is going to more investments. Bought the missus a car paid for that out of the bond. Cellular is down to zero.

Doing very well for yourself! I am turning 28 next month, netting 41.5, but that is including some rental income.

Started in development and support, did some BA and project management and now I am the director of a small software company.

What in the name do you do for a living? That's a huge salary for someone your age ;)

Interesting to see how things pan out looking back across 7 years, especially with OP:

2008

2009

2015

What about others....? I'm sure you can find a few other members who have posted year on year. :)

was money the only reason why you left development?

Actually not at all. I always enjoyed BA, architecture and project management more than dev. Just figured dev was the place to start, I feel you need dev experience to be able to design something. So sarted doing that, did a couple of systems, some big some small, some awesome and a few terrible ones. Then shareholding in our company shuffled around and I was offered shares and a title, had to buy my own office though.
