Sounds about par for a BA...
Not purely a BA. Bit of this, bit of that, with an incredibly niche skillset. I'm one of the guys who gets called in to figure out problems and solve them quickly without having to worry about getting more resources or too much red tape.
I've been offered been offered a lot more on a contract basis, but not keen to move.

Care to share what these skills are? Might help the rest of when choosing what to do with our lives.

I know this is a very private question and I apologise for it, but I would realLy like to know how much people in South Africa earn per month, and how they spend it.

I am 23 years old and I earn R8 000 a month before tax, I spend my money on:
Transport (taxi and bus) - R1 500
Groceries (Food and toiletry) - R1 100
Entertainment (Movies, Cd's purchases, clubbing) - R 500
Clothes - R 300
Loan repayments (Furniture, student loan) - R 1500
and I save about R 1200 a month

I don't have a car, house (I stay with my parents), internet access at home nor medical aid because I can't afford them.

The salary alone does not say much though, it is more relevant of what you studied and which industry you are in in currently plus years experience in it. But if you are for example working in the IT industry with an assumed 1 to 2 years experience, then this is an horrible situation to sit in. Most big corporates in SA have graduate programs which pay in the the range of at least 2-3x this amount for someone with no experience straight out of varsity

Would you tell others if you had skills in a niche market?

I don't think the market is so small that sharing what your niche skills are would affect your potential salary or future employment.

His experience would also count against anybody who decided to pursue these skills now.

Maybe I wrong.

It's a very niche market, to the point that you can probably identify me on LinkedIn with 4 or 5 keywords...

Currently in the same boat...one of 2 companies in Norway doing this work. It pays well and its interesting, but I'm only going to be in my home town for 3 weeks from now until October, so pulling 300hrs a month is not uncommon. So much work out there for those with the right skills. I was very lucky to get into this section...especially since I was earning R200/week while gaining experience in my earlier years.

Actually looking to move into a slightly different area, pending some certifications. Maybe immigrate.

You wouldn't happen to be working for Atmel?

Nope, we're a small company. I haven't programmed Atmel chips in nearly 9 years now.

I studied with the entire intention of doing micro processor programing etc.
I finished studies, and didnt exactly find much in the line of work except with PLC's. After 3 months i wanted to kill myself and ended up falling into something else.

I really enjoyed that kind of work though
