How much money do you earn? And how do you spend it?

Your salary may not be great but you own an asset and you work for yourself.

Working for myself is relative... I work for clients who are a lot less forgiving than employers. Leave? Sick? Dead family member? 12 hour workdays? Who cares? Clients certainly don't.

Trying to make the transition to product development where we own products and services we can sell on our own terms. Funding such endeavors is a PITA though.

Maybe a silly question, why do you fear unit trusts?

I fear the stock market currently ... signs of 2008 again for me ... rather have my savings in cash where at least the principal is 'guaranteed' - With stocks of any kind (UT, ETF, Trackers) - you could go negative. So while I am in the 'market' with UT or ETFs ... they are because of my pension contributions ... plus I hate brokerage fees, etc ;-)

In other news, seeing what others are earning ... I earn too little for my experience and skillset - time to look for a new job!! Got too comfortable at my current employer

Definitely. There's more to life than money. Your typical BA's work life is pretty boring.

can you give some examples of how this is boring? I must be missing something here because my work is exciting and fast paced.

If your work as a BA is "Boring" then you are not doing your job properly. Either that or your company doesnt know what a BA should be doing :)

I said typical BA. I work in insurance and banking and deal with many BA teams and most of what those guys do is dreadful. They're too tied down by red tape. I wouldn't call myself a BA but when there isn't red tape, I quite enjoy what I do as well.

then it sounds like a case of the company not understanding the BA role, red tape shouldn't apply to BA's

I agree with you in that case, I wouldn't want to be part of that team :)

Exactly. It's very much about the environment. Partly why I'm looking to move out of banking.

Good Man, corporate is the Devil and the largest destroyer of innovation and creativity I have ever seen.
Yip, that's exactly how I'm feeling. Lateral thinking is my biggest strength and they tend to punish you for it.
The quest to find a new job starts end of June. I'm leaning towards the telecommunications industry or similar - engineering is a great fit for me. Will see how it goes though.

I managed 7 months with Vodacom, It was so limiting in terms of creativity and innovation I was dreading going to work everyday. Thank God i got out of there.

even broked down per month that's a little 79k a month :wtf:

Yup, but I cannot really go up to someone and say I earn 80k per month, as next month I might only do 10k

Interested to know how. My guess is he has his own business

Currently 3 businesses, a couple of rental properties and I dabble in some consulting work over weekends and evenings. Basically working a 65 hour week at this point.

Honest Q, is all the time spent for said money really worth it?

I really don't think so, but I am doing it at the moment because it's helping me get 'ahead' on bond payments, vehicle installments, savings etc. But I cannot see myself working like that over the long term, I would say 2 or 3 years max, by then I should be earning boat loads more for the same hours or earning the same for much less hours. That's the plan in any case.

Not looking at heading abroad?

I'm curious - how transferable is BA experience to other countries/markets?

We've considered it but it would mean significant sacrifice on the part of my wife. Specialist doctor qualifications don't transfer over to many countries, so it would mean my wife would have to restart as a GP or registrar at best.

At the moment the country isn't bad enough to warrant it. We're living comfortable lives, have job security and get to go on an overseas trip every year, if we want. The benefits above this, for moving elsewhere, just isn't there yet to make it worthwhile.
