How much money do you earn? And how do you spend it?

Not quite... I said, that I would likely earn 2-bar by now if I had stayed in SA. I earn way more than that now. :p But, yes 2-bar in silicon valley is pretty much a small space under the bridge... ;) (Realistically, it's an ok-ish car, and an ok-ish 2-bedroom condo, in a boring, non-trendy neighborhood that will take 30 years to pay off.)

Your "ok-ish" is much different from my "ok-ish" :p
Sorry for derail, well... this thread gets revived every few months so it doesn't matter if I derail it slightly.

Were you 1 bar + guys head hunted or did you just apply for the job?
Did you apply through an agency?

Also, software engineering is huge so what specifically in SE? and Languages?

Came over to Australia with no job. Applied for 3 jobs, got offered 2. Took the wrong one and was unhappy. Applied for another one, and got it and was out of the job I didn't enjoy in 3 months.

So now a .NET developer also learning MS CRM which is huge in government here.

I was contacted directly by the overseas company for my first US job, and I was head hunted for my second US job. I write primarily scientific software. I use C/C++ mainly with some Python and R every now and then.

Seeing as we're on a hijacked wagon already:

I'm still scouting out a way to expand my business to foreign soil. Problem is I don't have any contacts (bar a very big one that I'm wary of) to take me there. Nowhere near the 1-bar mark yet, sadly... Anyone with advice, leads or channels? Leads or channels will most likely land you commission or revenue share of sorts if projects materialise. Without getting into politics and so forth, I'd really like to move my business abroad as our economy isn't very favourable for a small (11 employee) organisation.

Got called out of the blue by recruiters in London "Havoc...we hear you're qualified in 3 months...how do you feel about working in Europe / Caribbean?"

I wouldn't call it head hunted though...they called many people with the same line.

@cguy - remind me...quant stuff right?

Yes, correct. I focus on both the "what" and the "how", where usually these are two different types of people. In reality these two are interdependent.

4% increase this month (we get bi-annual increases).. feel like I'm getting shafted and my company isn't serious. Maybe time to look for a new job

If you get 4% twice a year that's pretty good. I used to work for a company that gave me 8% for the first bi-annual increase, but never found out what the next would be. I guess they paid too crappy and a challenge was needed in order to get serious salary offers, so I left.

So did you do the foreign country CA route - mostly working as an auditor of hedge funds etc? I got two Linkedin messages from people recruiting for foreign audit firms...contemplating giving my contact details but would rather first want to see what positions they offer.

Maybe, but I'm not earning that much in the first place. Which is why it's so frustrating

FS space is desirable for a number of reasons yes but certainly not the only option. Yeah just phone them and ask - they probably won't tell you salary at a minimum they should be able to give you a couple countries that are options.

Yep. I just dont want recruiters to phone me and wanting me to come for an interview just to have me on "their system". I am not actively job hunting but would like to know what the options are. I guess is is worth networking a bit and not feel bad to possibly come accross as wasting their time if not applying for anything. I do realise they need a face to face or at least a phone call to know who they are dealing with and where I will suit their placements. I haven't seriously thought about working abroad though my wife is keen but with a 3 year old I think one has to evaluate carefully.

I was headhunted for my last position in SA. Generally a bit harder when you move to a new country and don't have previous work experience in that country. I was lucky that I managed to land a job the second day I was in Aus. Doing C# MVC stuff mainly for Merc and many of the major fashion brands.

I'd imagine a 3 year old makes options abroad quite appealing. Young enough to not be uprooted.

Not sure about Durbs, but here you can expect to be around the R8000 mark.

10-15k depending on company

So I work remotely, really good gig. R150/hr, I work about 60hrs approx. a month. My boss is a dev so he has realistic expectations so I don't get stressed time wise. I'm free to use whatever technology I want, have an MSDN sub.

Thing is I graduate this year, so its going to be really hard to find a job in Durban to match this. The cons with the formal job being office hours and traffic. The only pro being job security.

I'm also free to work on my own projects. My income from my phone apps basically cover, my car insurance and data contracts. The money I make from my job is just basically spending which is bad, I need to start saving.

Unit trusts are a terrible option!!!

They are a good option!! alot of people just dont understand finance. Its like people say oh wow i have been given a car allowance so i get more out every month - um no they restructure your salary - you actually get less!!
