How much money you will save if you fill your petrol tank today

Many South Africans will have to cough up between R40 and R55 for a tank of petrol from tomorrow, depending on the size of their vehicles' fuel reservoirs.

Fuel prices are set to climb to record-high levels from midnight, driven by increased international petroleum prices, a weakened rand, and the implementation of the Slate Levy.

The Slate Levy is a mechanism designed to automatically compensate for the daily fluctuations in fuel prices which result in consumers paying more or less than the Basic Fuel Price at a particular point in time.

I think that the slate levy system should be removed, or at least exclude imported fuels.

If a refinery isn't more efficient than simply buying 1 days worth of fuel each day on the open market, it probably shouldn't be in business. While some oil companies can claim that running their refineries keeps people employed, SA is doing massive amounts of fuel imports at the moment, and I don't think that citizens should prop up oil companies which time their purchases badly.

People don’t get that. They act as if chucking in the 10l to get back to full is going to be make-or-break. As if they’re saving hundreds, possibly thousands. Getting petrol tomorrow morning will be nice and easy.

Yeah, I remember driving past a Sasol station one night before a big increase.

Watched as people were stuck in queues waiting to fill up to save R30. One or two then got out of their cars to buy some kak inside to snack on while they wait.

Petrol is one of those weird ones, not just in SA.

I remember an economics textbook which pointed out that people would drive around to find the lowest fuel price (in the US) to save a dollar or two on a tank, but then happily pay $10 at the convenience store.

Recently someone posted to Twitter that it might be due to the large neon price signs. People 'feel' petrol price changes more than changes in other prices.
