Hi all

So for the first time in a while I have been offered a job that I can say pays a decent salary. I know we live differently and what is luxurious for one person might be a necessity for another. My real question is what is considered a decent salary to live on in south africa, say to pay for:

House - rent/bond
Medical aid
Groceries and such
Transport - be it bus, train or private car, it doent matter.
And other living expenses I might have forgotten, not forgetting savings ofcourse.

Please give figures.

15k given favourable circumstances and excl saving for a bachelor lifestyle. That would be cutting it fairly close though, esp with rent & car.

That's on the luxurious side for sure.

Really? Some of my friends were being offered that straight out of university (honours degrees). They were pretty big companies though. And for the fortunate few in management consulting, one can start at between R35k-R40k/month. But then you have no life :p

After tax, that's very good

The proposed minimum wage of R4 500 is decent, any amount more than that is extravagant.

Depends on your age and years in the job market. Assuming you started working at around age 22 after some sort of tertiary education, one can start putting benchmarks down for decent salaries at say age 25 and age 30. I would say the figures would be R20k and R30k respectedly, gross. That would be par.

I cant see how one is supposed to have a baby, own a 3bed house, pay a average car and insurance, medical, life insurance, electricity, rates and basic things like internet, DSTV, groceries and still have a bit left to save when paying anything less than that. All things you expect to be able to have at age 30. You must still be able to go out once or twice a month. Not even taking into account a hobby like cycling or golf membership.

Depends on if the wife also work or not. But it does not change what a good salary is.

I have never heard of anyone who started with that much straight out of varsity, maybe with a couple of years experience to back up the qualification then yes. But then again you did say "for the fortunate few".

Well in South Africa, I would say 1000 Rand a day in your pocket and you are okayish. That will be about 30k clean a month. On the other hand I know someone who gets just that and the house and car are already paid off and still barely manages. Thank's God the wife is earning a fairly decent salary too otherwise . . .

Depends bigtime on where you live.

To those not living in Gauteng / CPT you're looking at a LOT less on average.
