that's funny. Considering this is Africa, in central Europe you can live comfortably with a salary of 15-20k Rand. Weird that you have to earn 30k in SA. Retarded thread and delusional replies.

I think one can have a decent life with 15k per month. 30-35 is very luxurious already. but let me clarify that I'm talking about a bachelor life.

I don't have a salary but currently income ranges between R15,000 to R80,000 within 2-3 months, but in Zambia my expenses are
1. Electricity - appx R250
2. Maid (6 days a week but works halfday) - appx R700
3. Food - appx R1500
4. Mobile Internet - appx R200
5. Blackberry Subscription appx R100
6. Rent - R0
7. Fuel - appx R2500

All cars bought cash (3) , and only have 3rd party insurance which is appx R900 a year, but no medical insurance and the like.
You can get by here quite well with R10,000 if you're single.

Because ur question is conditional, I'd say a good salary is a salary that will allow you to cover your basic needs (transport, food, insurance, accommodation)with 40% of what you earn and the remaining 60% can go to savings or can also be used for luxuries.

I survive okay-ish on R12000, a month:

Expenses:

Rent: R4450
Water+Lights: R900
Car: R1000 (I put a large deposit down when I got it so I dont pay much)
Cell phone: R750 (Contract with Calls)
Internet: R1150 (4 Meg uncapped Mweb, luxury)
Total: R8250

I canceled my medical aid as I hardly get sick, and my only monthly luxury is my internet connection.

That leaves me with R3740 a month, and thats enough for food, petrol, and everything els, dont normally have much left at the end of the month so dont have savings.

PS and yes I am a bachelor, staying alone.

Please get yourself a hospital plan. Accidents happen,

Where are you in Zambia? I'm at the Radisson Blu in Lusaka for the next week, lets have a drink?

Ps: you're paying way too much for your maid.

Can of beans and half a loaf of brown bread I think can be had for less than 10 bucks. It's possible!
Doesn't count. Beans are primarily (50+) carbs and the bread is only.

I can pull off R550 easily too eating pap all day long but thats not what I meant. And I'm assuming krycor is aiming for semi balanced too.

I cook en mass :D So i usually cook for 3-4 meals overlapping
I still don't think you can make R9 for a meal. Not without compromising on the healthy part.

e.g. What I just cooked with thumb-sucked prices:

Paprika - R3
Onion - R2.5
Peas - R4
Chicken - R15
Tomato - R3
Mash - R5
Spices - N/A
Mushrooms - R 15 [*luxury]
Glass of wine - R5 [*luxury]

So R32.5 + R20 luxury. Thats good for maybe 2 meals at my current rate. In fairness the result is a fairly epic meal. :D

Come to think of it the carbs is probably the issue. I've got R5 carbs in there versus R45 non-carbs.

hmmm..maybe I need to add more fillers & more carbs...

Is it high, I thought its normal as I have multiple computers and servers on 24/7 ?
Set geyser to lower temp, add timer to run 1 hr per day. To give you a ballpark figure...I'm at R250 with 1 gaming rig. I doubt the R650 you're paying extra is PCs. More likely to be geyser, pool pump, A/C or something like that.

I have tried switching the geyser off and used more electricity. We have a prepaid meter and I recorded the usage over a 2 week period during winter and again in summer. We definitely used more electricity by switching on and off as opposed to leaving the geyser on 24/7.

The cheapest meal I could manage, was baby spinach, basil and parsley fresh from my potted garden. One tin of tuna (cost about R12) and a bit of olive oil and balsamic vinegar.

The timing needs to be right. The idea is to keep the temp of the geyser as low as possible for as long as possible. The warmer it is the more energy it bleeds.

So:
~3 AM geyser on
~4 AM geyser off
~6 AM shower - this drains some of the warm water & replaces it with cold water.
~next 21 hours...geyser sits idle with reduced energy loss & zero energy usuage

Importantly its not switched on *while* I'm showering. That would defeat the point. Additionally the geyser is set at a low temp...so I'm showering with ~75% warm & 25% cold. Apparently a geyser blanket helps too, but I wouldn't know.

The above would of course not work if you've got a large family & are at/near geyser capacity.

I never measured it but unless my geyser defies the laws of thermodynamics then timing it like that saves power.

:erm: it did not occur to me to switch the geyser off when taking a shower or a bath. That makes sense.

We switch geyser on between 6-7pm. That gives enough hot water to take care of the family bathing in the morning and dishes and that's pretty much all we need.

Yip, it seems that a lot of people (particularly younger people) are cancelling their medical aid in order to maintain their lifestyles.
This causes a major problem for the medical aids which now have an ageing and sicker client base and therefore no younger, healthier people to help fund the schemes. If this trend keeps up it will make private medical aid unaffordable for everyone.

I'm interested to see what will happen when NHI is forced down our throats.

It's medical insurance. Insurance being the key word.
It's not there to be gotten value from on a day to day basis. Rather, it's there in case of extreme need - and hopefully for you that will never arise.
Do you have the same attitude to car insurance?

Exactly, if you are in an accident and need any kind of serious care, that 25k is going to look like a bargain.
