I make R5k per month and live pretty comfortably, driving an old mercedes and even have money left over for the odd visit to the massage parlour on month-end Fridays.

You missed a zero there or living with mom?

It also depends on area or whether staying with parents or ...

Provided this is for one of those designer and developer jobs, here is an interesting interactive infographic that will put everything in perspective: Salaries Around The World

It shows the average salaries of designers and developers around the world (South Africa included).

umm that doesn't look accurate. $30 000 PA for a software developer?

You need to include all your transport costs in your "fuel" bill to make it comparable. My fuel cost is my total transport cost.

I keep my commuting costs separate to my fuel costs as one is for work and one is for pleasure. For my budget I've always worked on 5% of my gross as covering my work expenses - travelling; clothes; lunch; etc

Doesn't sound too far off as an average for developers in Jhb at least. There are many junior guys out there pulling less than R20k/pm.

The infographic is for everyone if I'm not mistaken. Your really well paid senior guys move into management, so you can't really call them programmers anymore, even if they do still program.

As a parent of 3 kids I've yet to see why the need for private education? My eldest lives in Natal and we are in Western Cape and two of my school going children both go to public schools.

Reality is we don't have an extra R10K per month to waste on bragging rights, there are still many public schools who outperform the majority of private schools. I live in an area where the 2nd, 3rd and 4th best schools are all public, quiet an achievement with the number of quality private schools in our area.

I question netting R40k as being enough for private education, more like > R60K and plus R10K for every extra child.

So you reckon I send my 3 kids to private school for bragging rights?

Think you got your own set of issues.

Took my car in for its first service and only had 9100km after 13 months - more than half the distance was done doing holiday trips.

then 700 p/m :D

and yeah my car does +-550 a month so not much at all

and i dont go on holidays :(

and cpt has very good public schools but those do charge alot as well if im not mistaken
