The true price of petrol in South Africa

Around R6.22 of every litre of petrol sold in South Africa consists purely of taxes that have nothing to do with the actual cost of procuring the product.

If this amount were removed from the retail price of petrol in May 2024, the inland price of unleaded 95 would drop from R24.25 to R17.85.

Yeah, remind us every few months. We've had numerous of the same articles. Only the amounts change due to the petrol price

Sadly, these taxes are not to the benefit of the road users either. If taxes were applied towards the maintenance, upgrades and safety of roads, I would pay with a smile, but currently, we pay for an increasing amount of potholes, and deterioration of roads, with the added danger of Hijackings, Spiking, etc, we not only pay increased amounts of taxes, for something we are yet to see, we are paying increasing amounts towards vehicle maintenance as potholes cause severe damage to cars, and causes and increase in vehicle accidents. Our roads have become a danger in every possible way there is, from crime, accidents caused by poor road conditions and potholes that easily fit a car, to road users that do not know what the purpose of road safety laws are for. Loadshedding was the worst as most road users (especially taxis) would simply fly over robots and stop signs, like they were not even there, emergency lanes became an additional lane for those who deem themselves above waiting in the severe traffic everyone faces, and islands on fly overs or traffic circles became taxi ranks, and if you manage to survive your daily commute, you face the criss-cross maze of road users flying at a 45° from the far left lane, over 4 busy lanes, to turn right at a red robot, and if you are lucky not to be hijacked while in commute, you get home to do your mandatory safety checks before entering your driveway, out of fear of being attacked and burgled or shot in an attempt to gain access to your vehicle and home. We pay more and more taxes, to those who line their pockets, and are un-phased by this, with their squad of armed forces and body guards, and we suffer from the road neglegence and increased pressure on the citizens pockets, driving even more to crime.

Those figures are a fiction, how can one of our neighbours retail fuel for the equivalent of R3.50 per liter?

Yes but this R6.22 is put to good use by our beloved government.

And they still had the nerve to try and make people pay via the eishTolls for the road upgrades…
