That list of standard equipment is actually quite shameful.

It would be great if the Germans would stop the bolt-ons with their “packages” and be more like the east with higher spec default equipment.

These things will be everywhere.
I'd wager a high percentage of people who'll be driving these do not earn circa R75k a month.
They'll be on some stupid GFV finance package.
Posers gonna pose :D

A young junior developer landed his first job with us.

I have no idea what he earned exactly, but given it was his first job (front-end dev, circa 2015), you'd think he'd be more wise with his money and start to save for a place or similar.

Anyway, I don't know how he financed this, but he bought an A45 AMG after a few months. It was brand new and we heard him talking to the dealership/finance houses/etc... organizing this magnificent deal.

Pretty much the entire office tried to dissuade him, but his reasoning was that he had to show he was progressing to his family, friends and community. Apparently buying an expensive car is the way to do that.

Those monthly payments, insurance, etc... must have been up to 90%+ of his salary. Did I mention he had just passed his drivers and picked this for a first car?

Most likely on the Agility plan. You can get an A class for under R10k a month. BUT the car is never yours.

14k on a car per month, wow I'm at under 5500 for 2 cars. People have way too much money

Remember R75 net.

That's roughly R113 000pm before tax, with no other deductions.

For a base spec 2 series

People at that age have no other expenses though. Probably live with parents, no medical aid, no kids to support.

Not a clever thing to do but who was clever at that age...?

No it's 75k gross, 14500 comes in at 27% of the net from that.

Such disparity when you look at other countries.

I'm on a few car-related subreddits and it's not uncommon to see people straight out of school working their first entry-level job and being able to afford cars that would cost R750k and up over here.
