How Netflix helped ShowMax in South Africa

The way Netflix helped is that they blocked Unotelly and then this exposed the local Netflix offering for how sparse it was.
This caused people to look around and check out showmax

+1

With hardly any devices supporting ShowMax, it's still a fail. Netflix is (or can be) loaded on pretty much everything...

Yes, despite by utter loathing for anything Naspers the main reason I don't use Showmax is because its not supported on PS3 or pretty much anything else.

More and more impressed with ShowMax. They recently quietly rolled out continuous play on web, where this has only been available on their Apple TV app previously. Their Apple TV app is really great.

I find myself using them more and more

Would be nice if there was a ps3/xbox app. But chances of that are slim

Same here, however, found actually stuff to watch on Showmax, so at this stage pleased with their offering.

As for device support, I have old laptop hooked up to the tv, so no problems there (use it also for youtube, iTunes etc).

Going to cancel my Netflix and unotelly sub. Will connect again later when nothing on Showmax interest me anymore.

That's a horrible solution, and one that I refuse to give in to...

My thoughts exactly.

If there was a PS3 app I'd happily take showmax for a spin.

But I'm not plugging my laptop into the TV on a permanent basis.

Plus I still have access to the US Netflix content :D

who the fukk wants to watch TV from a laptop plugged into your TV?

This is the 21st century. We have media players, Rokus etc. Nice, integrated, all in one solutions, plugged into high end AVRs and decent TVs. Laptop kludges have no place in our entertainment stacks.

Also, try explaining to your technologically-disinclined wife how to watch showmax when she has to go and get a laptop, plug it into an hdmi port, then set the display up right, then find the website and log in etc.

All from one remote is essential.

They don't offer captions (subtitles) for the Deaf and hard of hearing, so sticking with Netflix.

“We’re a small start-up that’s been in business for less than nine months, so being considered in the same breath as Netflix that’s been around for almost 20 years is flattering,” he said.

Who did that? Only Kevin Lancaster and Naspers considers them in the same breath. Talk about selling your soul.

Calling a wholly owned subsidiary of a major media corporation a start-up is ridiculous.

Yup.
Add to the fact that they're basically hopping on the bandwagon of technology that has been evolving for those 20 years, and has now come of age...
