Lemme rephrase. Nobody in SA stocks Honda handbrake shoes except Honda. I just had them rebonbed. Cost me like R1,352 to fix the mess the dealers made, but at least I've got new shoes, the drums are skimmed and straightened (something the dealer messed up as well), the handbrake lever now pulls up correctly and it's biting like never before.

All the dealers did after I told them 4 times there were issues with the handbrake was "turn it up tighter". Eventually they turned it up so far the shoes dragged on the drums the whole way as I was driving, and the result was worn shoes, steel on steel, in a few thousands kms. They refused to accept responsibility for it and quoted me insane amounts to fix it.

I'll be honest, I love Honda, but their dealerships closing down is not a good thing. Service centres are closing and the best ones around me are gone. The one that remains I wouldn't touch with someone else's pole, so I've resorted to doing things privately.

I won't buy a Honda in SA again.
Probably specific to the CRV....but I still find it hard to believe.

I got brake pads and discs (Ferodo and ATE) from Masterparts and Goodhope spares for an Accord and Ballade.

Yes, regular brake pads sure. But Honda has all kinds of parts that you don't find in Midas. It just isn't there. Sparkplugs on my car, for example. Yes, they last around 120k km, but they are titanium tipped or something like that. R1k for 4. Not like other cars where you pay around R300 for 4. R1k for 4.

Just some things that are expensive, and it comes as a surprise. The tensioner pulley, for example. Just a bearing that went. R9k. Google one for a Golf? R400. From Honda is was R8,900 for the CR-V. For a damn wheel on a bearing.

Although the service book has 120k KM intervals for the spark plugs, you can actually use the cheaper spark plugs but you'll have to replace them every service/second service. The Iridium plugs work out cheaper in the long run so I'm not sure why anyone would do this though.

Attached quote from when I changed mine (the K20 and K24 use the same plugs).

I agree that they are ridiculous with their parts prices but a lot of the general maintenance parts you can find much cheaper if you know where to look :)

Other than having the gearbox bearings and clutch replaced in my Honda, I haven't had any issues and it's 14 years old (I've had it for 6 years).

Yeah I guess the only problem with the plugs would be to get them in the same length. The one in the CR-V is a bit longer than your regular plugs. I know you have to shop around, but man, when something goes konk you just want it fixed, then "shopping around" is a nightmare. The handbrake shoes are a prime example of this.

EDIT: Like, with VW for example, you can drive a Jetta into every second house here in East Lynne in PTA and by the 5th house you will have spare parts and consumables to service your car 10 times over for a sixpack of beer. With the Honda I called around for MONTHS, with everyone giving me the same answer. "Sorry, we can't find aftermarket shoes for that handbrake". This includes places like Bosch Service, Midas, etc. Big names. Nada. I ended up having to re-bond the shoes because it was the only option I had.

I like that you went Iridium, have you watched this video before?
I dig this Yankee, everything in all his videos is for stupid people like me to understand

He talks about pro's and con's on all the different spark plugs out there, ok maybe not all, but a few of them.

Spitty - Triumph Spitfire. 1968 (i think) - It has some alleged numbers, but pretty sure they're meaningless.
The great white shark - 450SLC 1976 - 80k on the clock (legit!)
The black beast - CLS350 2006 - 91k on the clock (had it since 70k on the clock +-10 years ago. I really don't drive that many km's in a decade!) 13847961064_b439750ebb_k.jpg

Download the MyToyota app and book it in for a "value service."
Any Toyota older than five years qualifies. Been using it for a while on the old man's Hilux.

Most recent service:

You'd think Toyota would be decent enough to let him know that such a service exist.

I don't think the dealerships even know about it. Every time I book it in I have to take a screenshot of the quote, then when you show them they run around like headless chickens for about half an hour before agreeing to do the work.

Many of the manufacturers have this, they run oil service specials every month or 2, Honda is R899 for the oil service, depends on the model though.

It's a cheap and easy way to keep a full dealer service record without going bankrupt.

When my Toyota Auris needed the spark plug change, the dealer wanted R1300 for the plugs and i lauged.
Did research and found that it uses the Iridium plugs and i found NKG Iridium spark plugs for R600 from my local spares shop.

Tjeeer
I have been doing DIY services on my 2011 Auris since 159 000km and now the car is on 245 000km with no issues.
I still use the OEM oil filter then GUD air filter plus Shell 15w40 oil.
They are good reliable cars.
