1998 Mk3 Golf 1.6 GS that my parents bought for me when I was in Grade 12 in the year 2012. It had 160 000km and was a one owner, lady driven car. It is almost on 260 000km. Its time for an upgrade but the thing is so damn cheap to run and maintain.

Best car I ever owned was my 1998 Golf Mk3 GTS. Loved that car! Drove it like I stole it until it was stolen from me, then got it back, then a friend wrote it off.

My dad owned a Freelander 1. What a POS it was... Clutch issues, gearbox issues, injector issues, terrible build quality (trim would just fall off). That was all before the car had hit 170,000km. Electronic ignition completely failed too, but being an industrial electronic engineer - he designed and built his own electronic starter.

I believe the Freelander 2 is far superior in every way and doesn't suffer the poor build quality the 1st generation had. Also it wasn't built by the British...
I could have written the exact same post, my dad wanted to give me his Freelander and I was like I could rather buy a new car at the rate it was eating up money. Spent months in the garage

Uncle has the below car which he has owned since new from 2008/9.

Car Make and Model: Merc C180
Age: 12/13 years
Mileage: 296 000km
Plans?: Its been used by my brother for about a year now and he is trying his level best to maintain it.

Car has aged well and worked hard with minimal issues. The interior is showing its age as some buttons are fading. Body still looks good and all electrics work.

The body could do with a decent detail including a front bumper respray and rims refurb.
Only major issue that has failed was the steering lock/rack. All it needed was continuous service maintenance.

If i were to buy a Merc, i would probably buy it to give it some love then later sell it as there is still plenty of life in it. Its a lazy motor but it drives well and comfortable.

I remember we did a Kimberly trip 5 adults years ago and it did the 1000km trip with no issues.

The 2006 C180 was a real beaut with a solid engine. I regret giving mine to my brother when I upgraded...he didn't maintain it ay all and it's leaking oil and spitting exhaust fumes faster than Eminem now.

This is sad to read.
They are good reliable cars.

Checked my Fuelly logs and apparently I put on 7000km during last year. The year before, before COVID happened, I did 10'000km.

Sitting on 270'000km. The car will be ten years old this year, so I'm itching for something new.
272, almost 273'000km at the moment.

I replaced the steering column bushing for the electric power steering motor last weekend, as it was worn down. Drives good as new again, but the new car itch has yet to be scratched.

I would like a Territory ST like @Stuey74 has, but they are scarce as hen's teeth in SA. Lots of Ghia and TX's, though.

Its the best car in the world seeing as its paid off. No plans to get rid of it anytime soon. Only real issue i had was a coil needing replacement.

The G4FC motor in there will last you forever as long as regular maintenance is done. Mine is probably due for a valve clearance check, seeing as they have a bucket and shim system and not hydraulically adjusted like most new cars.
