How safe SA’s best-selling cars really are

I don't want to be in any vehicle crashing at 120km. Be safe and drive slower and for crying out loud leave the bloody cellphone alone.

Sadly, driving @ 120km/h in SA nearly gets you run off the road on national roads for driving too "slowly".

I have to agree but I just ignore the moron with a death wish behind me these days. I drive a figo so according to those tests I should be afraid to drive very fast.

Some people think the 5 stars safety means driving at 160km is safe, meanwhile the cars are tested at 60km/h. The 5 stars can become 0 zero stars very quickly when driving to fast. Alas, people are uneducated or just very stupid when it comes to speed.

:wtf: Holy balls! I knew it was bad but that is horrible.

The problem with the NCAP ratings is they seem to be done on cars setup for a particular market - fairly obvious I know. Take my Rio for instance - Euro NCAP rates it at 5 stars but according to them ESC is standard, which makes the score better.

Rio's in SA don't have ESC, which makes me sad, and I assume would lower it to 4 or less stars?

The ratings apply to Polos made in 2009, 2010, and 2014.

So Polos made in the other years are a bit dodgy?

Think of MyBB more as a social site with some tech elements. It will save you a lot of pain and misery.

I think he means that it's categorised in the wrong section. It should be in the Motoring section...

Exactly! "But I have airbags" "But this is a safe car"

The other thing is that if you crash a 5 Star polo at 60km/h against a 5 Star BMW 3 series also going at 60 in the opposite direction, the BMW is going to come out better, just because it's heavier. Momentum is going to mean that the BMW will decellerate from 60 to ( call it ) 20km/h, which is just a 40km/h change in speed, while the Polo is going to be going from 60 to 20 in the opposite direction, which is an 80km/h change in speed, thus twice as much shock on the car, the components, and the passengers.

Conservation of momentum...my high school science teacher gives this post the thumbs up. :)

That's why it's best to drive a bakkie with 800kg of bricks in the back ;)

Your car can have 10 stars... mistakes or lawless driving will still kill you!
