Digital Covid-19 vaccine passport for South Africa — How it will work

The National Department of Health is developing a digital Covid-19 vaccine passport in South Africa, a departmental spokesperson has told MyBroadband.

This comes after the minister in the presidency Mondli Gungubele said that President Cyril Ramaphosa had instructed his cabinet members to look at the possible introduction of a Covid-19 passport.

“If South Africa introduces [a passport], and there is access to information from the National Institute for Communicable Diseases [NICD] that confirms that a person has been vaccinated, the question is if that person arrives Lagos, what resources will they use to verify this information that is stored on a database in South Africa?”

Yeah just scrap it before we sink our tax money into it. Thanks

I think this is part of a broader global solution that needs brought in.

Whether that’s broken it into each country having a certifying authority which stores administering info for the vaccination clinic or centralized to WHO/UN.

But a global digital cert book is needed much like the passport system needs revamping too. It’s frustrating that even if SA came up with a “perfect” system locally.. it would not work as global consensus is needed.

The current yellow bookie is like such a dated soln.

The ANC are basically implementing everything that they fought against during the freedom struggle, like implementing curfews, restrictions on movement and business operations, and now passes for public spaces.. this time it's not about race, it's about everyones freedom.

Why do we always immediately copy every bad (and authoritarian) idea from overseas?

The economy is suffering badly enough already.
It's becoming more like 1984 by the day.

Are we going to have separate busses and toilets and beaches again with signs everywhere saying "Vaccinated only"? Will you have to show your pass? While we're at it, let's add a law that vaccinated and unvaccinated may not intermarry. And must live in separate areas, and go to separate schools.

Freedom of movement is one of the most fundamental rights written into our constitution after Apartheid. This would restrict a healthy person's movement in public places simply for not having taken the vaccine.

You need consent before you put something inside someone's body.

They need to also manually add folks in, such as those on the Pfizer, Moderna and J&J research trials which are ongoing in SA, who have been vaccinated with those products.

As long as it's recognised internationally.

So you would prefer the tourism sector dies?
