How the Bushiris were smuggled out of SA

Johannesburg - Fugitive prophet Shepherd Bushiri and his wife, Mary, were issued with diplomatic passports bearing decoy names and applied with cosmetic facial changes before being smuggled out of South Africa in Malawian President Lazarus Chakwera’s hired jet, sources said.

Several insiders in the government’s security cluster – including diplomatic and military intelligence sources, police officers, and bureaucrats – told the Sunday Independent this week that Bushiri left in Chakwera’s plane last Friday following an operation planned by Malawian intelligence officials and executed by its embassy in Pretoria.

If this is true then it's going to make an awesome movie!

Consequently, the number of ML investigations and prosecutions relative to the predicate offences reported, investigated and prosecuted is low and not consistent with the identified ML risks. There is no ML conviction on foreign predicate offences which is consistent with the risk profile of the country and standalone ML, third party laundering being the bigger number compared to self-laundering. Malawi had no cases where the authorities had prosecuted a legal person for ML, which was contrary to some of the cases presented which showed the involvement of legal persons in ML. In these situations, only the natural persons were prosecuted. Consequently, it is not possible to determine the effectiveness of the regime in prosecuting legal persons for ML or the effectiveness of any sanctions. Though there is enabling legal framework to take alternate measures, Malawi has never experienced a situation requiring alternative criminal justice measures in cases where ML investigation has been pursued but where it is not possible to secure an ML conviction.

So...

  • After spending two weeks in jail, Bushiri was given the options and flatly refused the SA jail option; Chakwera, through the Malawian embassy, then lobbied the Ramaphosa administration for assistance;
  • Some members of the judiciary were then lobbied to ensure Bushiri was released on “soft” bail with less stringent conditions, no attachment of his bank accounts and assets except the R5m property in Centurion;
  • In SA, intelligence officers and some government officials lobbied or spun journalists and editors to blame the country’s porous borders and corruption for Bushiri’s escape.

the Malawian President, Lazarus Chakwera, influenced the Ramaphosa administration which influenced the judiciary which resulted in the influence of SA intelligence officers and other government officials which influenced the media.

Well, that is South Africa in a nutshell really.

Lately it seems that the NPA is charging anyone accused of a financial crime with money laundering in addition to the original fraud or theft charge they were originally accused of, even if there is no evidence of money laundering in the traditional "mafia" sense of the term. By that I mean the classic "Placement" -> "Layering" -> "Integration" stages of money laundering you'll see in shows such as "Breaking Bad" or "Ozark" or movies like "The Godfather".

No surprise that Naledi Pandoor has been fingered for her department's involvement in their escape. Dirty ANC officials everywhere you look.

Sounds like BS. Also written by Piet Rampedi, a known Zupta mercenary. To be fair, he did break the COVID corruption stories though the tried to tie it to Ramaphosa as he's also doing here.

This is perhaps the new normal for SA. I don't think anyone is shocked, not even Cyril.

The only part which I believe is true is that they had diplomatic passports, the rest is SA being SA. This is another Omar al-Bashir story.
Spot on. It's a revelation and a cover-up at the same time.

Edit: This story is counter-intelligence, a fabrication of our intelligence service. Good to see our tax randelas at work.

Given the way in which this cretin left the country, there is zero chance of this happening. It is impossible to see how the Governments of the two countries were no complicit in his travel arrangements.

This is just the good minister trying to put lipstick on the pig.

One way or another the Bushiris were surely on that plane. It can't be coincedence that they disappeared during the exact same time period that the Malawian president's deligation was in town. Whether they got away on that plane with help from the SA authorities or through sheer incompetence on the part of the SA authorities remains to be seen.

My bet is on that one

Yep. This delegation arrived in town to do just this. No one has been charged for this event. No one is dumb enough to charge anyone with this ... lest the canaries sing!

After the Gupta wedding contingency debacle, only the super-doff will roll over for this exodus.
