Jesus they made the process as laborious as practically possible to keep paying one way or another.

Removing your TV’s tuner

To remove the need to pay your TV licence, you cannot own a device which can receive a broadcast television signal. This includes a decoder or a TV set.

To render your TV incapable of receiving a broadcast signal, you need to remove its TV tuner.

This needs to be done by a professional, and needs to be checked by an SABC inspector – who charges R300.

You then have to send proof to the SABC every year that your TV cannot receive a signal. If an inspector comes to check, you pay an additional R300.

Disposing of your TV set

If you have sold, disposed of, or lost your television, you are no longer required to have a TV licence.

The SABC must be notified on a prescribed form (affidavit) of the changed circumstances.

It should be noted that a TV licence cannot be cancelled while there is money outstanding on an account.

I'm guessing a WHOLE lot of TVs are going to get "lost" very soon. It's much cheaper than paying a yearly "inspection" fee because you can be damn sure that they're going to send an inspector.

Analogue TV signals shouldn't even exist anymore. When that finally comes into effect, most TVs won't require a TV licence anymore.

My aunt recently sold a very old plasma tv on gumtree for way more than I would think any reasonable person would pay. You could actually buy a new LCD tv for the same price. It sold within a day. The guy who bought it said he didn't want to pay for a tv license. It just makes me wonder how many people who buy brand new TVs actually use it to watch SABC channels. I so wished that they would shift TV Licensing to the new digital TV set-top box decoder thing instead of the actual TV.

Surprised they haven't updated the requirement yet, i.e. to the UK spec or similar.

I wish I could cancel it, though because I get DSTV I still have to pay, even though I would stop paying if I could get rid of the stupid channels as I don't watch them. Also love how it costs more per year to have the inspector check than the license.

The law they reference mentions nothing about cancelling, and also nothing about having to get the SABC to come and check that your Monitor isn't capable of receiving a signal.

Law in South Africa

Two recent court cases, have earned the attention of newspaper readers
in South Africa.

1. One person was fined R1 000 for not having a TV licence.
2. Another was released on bail for R500 after being arrested for
murder.

The moral of this South African story:

If you do not have a TV licence and the inspector comes round, kill
him.You'll save R500.
It's the Right Thing To Do....

On of my biggest regrets was buying a TV and giving my ID which automatically gave me a licence.
I was saving R200 a year until 5 years ago.

No not so. Analogue or digital, if the TV has a tuner in it, it is capable of receiving a broadcast signal and MUST be licensed.

The DoC Minister of course has created a rather large problem by declaring that persons receiving a subsidised STB for DTT reception now does not require a licence. How anyone is expected to now "regulate" between those that should pay and those that should not pay for a licence is going to be a challenge.

It's not worth it to try and do anything the legal route with these guys.
If you are going to stop paying, just best to break off all contact and stop paying.
If they do drag you into court, then say your constitutional rights were violated by all the goings on at the SABC and the censorship and your money was being wasted on an unqualified idiot that the public protector said should be dismissed.

Anyone ever tried to insist the dealer remove the receiver before you will buy a new TV?

TV Licence debt stopped being listed in 2004. they cannot and do not blacklist you.
Does not affect your credit rating.

You'll get a few emails/sms's but after a while they give up.

Just don't pay unfair & unjust taxes.

Been since 2006, still harassing me, and they've found my wife's number as well now somehow.
